What Apps Should Twitter Highlight? Twitter HQ Wants to Know

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / August 18, 2009 1:01 PM / 308 Comments

twitterdeflogo.jpgTwitter is working on an automated method of discovering interesting 3rd party applications and websites built on its service to promote to users in the top right corner of its home page. Until that automated method is established, co-founder Biz Stone told us by email today that Twitter should do a better job of highlighting more projects and that he is open to suggestions for projects to feature.

We would love to make some suggestions, but we thought we'd start by asking our readers for ideas.

The short list of projects featured right now looks to us like a group of companies that Twitter has a financial interest in or are run by Silicon Valley celebrities. Stone assures us that's not the case (there is no affiliate relationship with Threadless, for example, and he's planning on highlighting the forthcoming event Twestival) - but let's offer him a list of lesser known apps to broaden what millions of people see when they log in to their stream of Tweets.

trazzlerpull.jpg
Stone and Evan Williams are invested as founding advisers of Trazzler,
but what other Twitter-based projects should be highlighted in this prime real estate?

Please post your suggestions for Twitter apps and projects that deserve some of the limelight in the comments below. We may grab the ones that get named more than once and hold a vote later to discover the "must-see" Twitter apps in the eyes of the ReadWriteWeb community.

We'll make sure the good people at Twitter HQ see these lists as well. We like to give them a hard time, but that's just because it's our job and because they are so important. We're excited to see the automated "cool app" discovery process when it's launched too.

For now though, what do you think millions of Twitter users should be shown in the corner of their pages? Add your favorites to the comments below.

  1. A non-consumer app, for marketing, customer relations, pr and entertainment: the interactive conversational platform app from contentAI.com is interesting and points to one direction that Twitter could evolve commercially:

  3. "Please post your suggestions for Twitter apps and projects that deserve some of the limelight in comments below."

I suggest Kinoma Play. It's an under-reported-on "social media browser" -- effectively, a great all-in-one media center for mobile with direct pipelines into Twitter and other social media services that matter.

It's available for Windows Mobile now and very soon for Symbian/S60, too.

  4. shameless plug http://crowdstatus.com :p

    The first twitter groups app.

However not sure I want it plugged as I have an update coming soon....

  6. The Summarizer! http://www.thesummarizer.com/

    -- snip --

Know what you’re talking about. If the “real-time web” is a massive cocktail party conversation, then The Summarizer is the party’s authority. It semantically connects the real-time web and traditional media to one another with their common threads, entities and topics.

  9. When did you add Facebook connect. I don't recall signing in here with it before, yet it recognized me. How? I'm not complaining, I love Facebook connect, I'm just curious. Thanks!

  11. TweetDeck, of course. TweetGrid is what I've found most useful for following things like #journchat, #blogchat and the like (using their Party feature). CTwittLike also promises to be pretty cool.

  12. TwitVid.com - A super fast way to share mobile videos on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. TwitVid.com works with any mobile phone, and was one of the first in the industry to launch their video tweeting app for the iPhone 3GS last month.

  13. I'm a big fan of Tweetpoint, a service that allows Twitter users to give other users a thumbs up or thumbs down (+1 point or -1 point) with a simple tweet for pretty much anything, online or in real life.

    Check it out at http://tweetpoint.me/

Yes, I'm biased on that suggestion.

  34. Oh how fun!

My friends and I have been working on http://www.supertwitter.com SuperTwitter. It's a visual display of tweets that's sweetest when you reference images. Here are some screen shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elvispresley/sets/72157619066414724/

  46. www.dailyrt.com

The only remaining fully functional ReTweet tracker. Tweetmeme doesn't really track retweets anymore, just links, and repeets.com and retweetist.com are dead for all intensive purposes.
