What Apps Should Twitter Highlight? Twitter HQ Wants to Know

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / August 18, 2009 1:01 PM / 308 Comments

twitterdeflogo.jpgTwitter is working on an automated method of discovering interesting 3rd party applications and websites built on its service to promote to users in the top right corner of its home page. Until that automated method is established, co-founder Biz Stone told us by email today that Twitter should do a better job of highlighting more projects and that he is open to suggestions for projects to feature.

We would love to make some suggestions, but we thought we'd start by asking our readers for ideas.

The short list of projects featured right now looks to us like a group of companies that Twitter has a financial interest in or are run by Silicon Valley celebrities. Stone assures us that's not the case (there is no affiliate relationship with Threadless, for example, and he's planning on highlighting the forthcoming event Twestival) - but let's offer him a list of lesser known apps to broaden what millions of people see when they log in to their stream of Tweets.

trazzlerpull.jpg
Stone and Evan Williams are invested as founding advisers of Trazzler,
but what other Twitter-based projects should be highlighted in this prime real estate?

Please post your suggestions for Twitter apps and projects that deserve some of the limelight in the comments below. We may grab the ones that get named more than once and hold a vote later to discover the "must-see" Twitter apps in the eyes of the ReadWriteWeb community.

We'll make sure the good people at Twitter HQ see these lists as well. We like to give them a hard time, but that's just because it's our job and because they are so important. We're excited to see the automated "cool app" discovery process when it's launched too.

For now though, what do you think millions of Twitter users should be shown in the corner of their pages? Add your favorites to the comments below.

  1. TwitArea. Well, it's a ...

But, it's native on twitter.com (FF extension), built on an open API (http://code.google.com/p/praized/wiki/API), using OAuth creds for authentication, publishes places info fully microformatted and is an good example of a service that can be extended (but don't trust me, I'm the CTO, read about what others are saying about it - http://bit.ly/twitarea).

  2. missing from my previous comment after it's a... [shameless_plug] - but the comment formatting ate my markup.

  8. www.bigtweet.com

Awsome bookmarklet. Enables you to tweet an interesting webpage, add it to your Delicious account, ping.fm and shorten the URL in a matter of seconds.

  9. I think TwitterFox is great for an add-on to Firefox.

    Also for the desktop: TweetDeck.

    And also HootSuite (hootsuite.com) & Twibes (www.twibes.com).

    Thanks!

  10. Yes, a link to Twibe. Also to email account and to Internet. Taking a break from work I allot a certain amount of time to surfing and pass through Twitter & Twibes on the way. I do that now with bookmarks, but face it, I tend to be lazy. Why do three clicks when one will do?

  11. The 3rd party app that I use with Twitter the most -- by far -- is Twibes http://www.twibes.com/. I started a Twibe on fountain pens a couple of months ago, twib.es/6NP, and it's been a terrific meeting place for fellow collectors and enthusiasts.

I believe that there are now thousands of Twibes on various interests and it seems to be growing by leaps and bounds.

  20. HootSuite, the professional Twitter client... all the goodness of a Tweetdeck but it's web-based, doesn't eat your RAM, has drag and drop columns and you can track stats on your content links. HootSuite has integrated Ping.fm, and you can even embed HootSuite columns on other sites.

HOOTSUITE IS THE BOMB! PLEASE INCLUDE HOOTSUITE!
