Small Business IT Hiring Grows, More Seek Mobile Programmers

A report released by freelancer hiring site Elance today shows a surprising amout of growth in hiring during the fourth quarter of last year, especially in IT categories.

Among some of the most sought after technical skills on Elance last quarter were PHP, Wordpress, HTML/CSS, graphic design, MySQL, JavaScript and iPhone development.

The report notes that mobile progammers are increasingly high demand, with 20% growth in demand for Android developers alone. Job postings for iPad programmers grew 15% over the previous quarter, with iPhone growing 10%.

As businesses begin to adapt their desktop Websites for mobile devices and tablets, demand for HTML5 coders has exploded, growing by 48% quarter-over-quarter.

For the first time since Elance has been producing these reports, demand for experts in a content mangement system broke the top three skills most-desired by employers. Wordpress was the second highest sought-after skill in the list, topped only by PHP.

It's worth noting that these numbers apply to activity on the Elance Website which, while somewhat substantial, is not necessarily a sample that's representative of any larger economic trends. It's still interesting nonetheless.
