Projecturf: Simple Project Management for SMBs

Written by Steven Walling / July 10, 2009 7:00 PM / 23 Comments

logo-projecturf.gifYou'd think the potential for new project management software had been exhausted. But then, you see something new like Projecturf. The company has aimed its sights squarely at small and medium-sized business, and its feature set is particularly well-suited to development teams.

With simple, elegant design, and a pricing plan comparable to Basecamp and other competitors, this new SaaS offering should capture a devoted following in no time.

Unlimited? Who Cares?

To date, most reviews and customer feedback on Projectruf have been wowed by the unlimited number of users and storage available all pricing levels of the software. But on comparison, promises of unlimited this or that are not exactly rare among project management solutions. What is fairly remarkable, especially for a new vendor who must be hungry for converts, is that they don't hold back any features in order to entice customers to upgrade.

Design Makes All The Difference

Projecturf is that it's extremely well-designed, especially when viewed alongside alternatives like Basecamp, Viewpath and Clarizen.

It's no surprise that Projecturf looks good. It was designed by Rareview Interactive, a Webby Award-winning design agency. There's ridiculously easy navigation, coherent layout of tasks and workflows, and full customization.

Not "Just Another" SaaS

Yet another new Web-based project management software package may seem underwhelming at first glance. But Projecturf is mature enough out of the box that it already is capable of competing with the stand-by solutions in the market.

  1. Another helpful software for project management

  2. I'm so tired of reading posts like this. So you're saying Projecturf is exactly like other project management apps out there? Why would I even click the link? What are they doing differently and/or better that means them worthwhile? This is like saying there's a new paper towel exactly like Bounty. Why would I stop buying Bounty in favor of its later-to-market copycat?

  3. Marina martin,

What I'm saying is that usually there's nothing exciting about another new project management app, but that Projecturf is an exception (which is why I chose to spend my time writing about it).

What's different about Projecturf that makes it worthwhile is this: design that is both attractive and easy to use.

To be frank, Basecamp and most other leading platforms have rested on their laurels when it comes to improving their UI, and most new pm solutions are too convoluted to be really usable. Projecturf isn't innovative per se, but they have a user experience that is efficient and pleasurable. That makes a big difference to people managing a project, in my experience.

  4. Marina Martin is right. I clicked, watched the video tutorial and closed it half-way: It is the same PM tool as webcamp, achievo or any other Webapp that thinks simple-task-storage = PM.
There are no (gantt)charts but yet-another-calendar. No relationship between tasks (what happens when in the chain of tasks one task is delayed), no resource management, I could go on and on.
Sure, the UI is very 2.0 and there's a discussion board, but, please, PM-Saas makers, have a look at a the basic features of a real PM first, before calling this a PM.

  7. @Jo — I too watched the video and found gantt-chart at 3/4 through ( you should have said with it a few seconds longer ).

  8. I agree, there is nothing new here. A very nice GUI and usability can be seen in Clarizen, and they also have all the other modules mentioned.
As a whole, the SaaS world offer new product every week now, and It's becoming extremely difficult to distinguish between them. Probably self-marketing is their only way to "twit".

  9. Right, it may be a good service, but why should I trust a start-up that just showed up on the market? It may disappear in a couple of months and all my project data, to say nothing about my money will be gone. It's better to stick with the bigger guys who've been on the market for several years, like Wrike.

  10. @Brian G. I followed your advice and watched the video. I would concur with Jo. What Projecturf has should not be considered a "dynamic gantt chart". I checked out the video of another product referred to in the feed above (Wrike) and you can tell the difference.

  11. Hi guys,

This is Chuck from Projecturf. Thanks for all the comments and input. Great feedback here. Projecturf was built as a simple project collaboration and management tool. We have specifically steered away from the clunky Microsoft look/functionality and have focused solely on building a product that helps you manage projects, files, tasks, and discussions easily. We call it simple project management. We don't want our users to have to spend hours setting up projects and managing data. We just want you to be able to get in, get stuff done, and get out. That goes for the Gantt chart as well. It's dynamic because it changes based on your tasks and milestones, you don't have to set anything up, and you can change the date range on-the-fly.

Just to point out some unique features of Projecturf for those who have asked - we have unlimited storage for users (designers and developers really love this because they are often sharing large files!), our UI is elegantly intuitive, as some of you have pointed out (isn't it nice to enjoy looking at the software you're using all day long?!), and we're constantly making modifications to the app based on user feedback (somewhat rare in our industry). Just this week we added .25 hour increments to the timecards because it was requested by our customers. Part of our goal is to listen and adopt user feedback.

Projecturf is a product we're passionate about and we're already working on new features. So we're here to stay. We know there's other products available, of course, but we always think having choices is a good thing. Each product is different and giving people options is never a bad thing (it may be for some businesses, but not for the customer!).

Keep the suggestions and feedback coming; all your comments are welcome (you can email us suggestions at support@projecturf.com). We’re working on version 2.0 right now and it is looking amazing, with a ton of new features based on input from real people like all of you - and of course - we provide free upgrades for life for all customers.

  14. Project management courses are most beneficial when there is a clear intent to address specific relevant and pressing issues.

  15. Is the pricing the only thing similar to Basecamp? I just find that we're having an abundance of such apps and not a single one is offering something new.

Hopefully there'll be a day when such applications are more intelligent, meaning they do some intelligent decision making instead of receiving and displaying data.

  18. Briefly, a project manager ‘gets things done’, just as a business manager does, but with respect to a specific effort: a project, instead of a continuing operation.

  19. iplanware can be installed on site or we offer an ondemand service. Non-profit and edu discounts available. The solution covers project management in addition to portfolio management and resource management.
