The pitch is that it's a single place to do all your social media work. If you're thinking it sounds like a clone of other multi-network social media apps, you'd be only partly correct. By signing up on the site, businesses get a single place to blog, share photos and post to social networks. With no free option, it's clearly positioning itself as a business tool and not a place for social media addicts, like FriendFeed or Ping.fm.

Social Media Labor-saving Device

Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik are co-founders of Etsy and now make up the engineering side of Postling. CEO David Lifson was a product manager at both Etsy and Amazon.com previously.

Its value proposition is to save time for small businesses that want to test the social media waters. You publish to a variety of platforms and networks, and all your activity is also aggregated in a central Postling blog hosted on a subdomain. There's a free 30-day trial for the service, but after that it'll be $9/month or $90/year.

Once you sign up and connect your accounts, Postling offers a simple interface for four basic activities. In trying out all of them, we quickly saw that although Postling has the right idea, it is definitely still in beta.

Status Updates: You can selectively post updates to Twitter and Facebook. Nothing really special here, since it's not doing anything that TweetDeck or Seesmic Desktop can't do for either of those networks.

Blogging: Postling supports posting to your WordPress, Blogger, Typepad, or Squarespace blog. On the one hand, it was extremely fast and easy to write and send off a post. But there were some bugs and missing functionality, such as poor image handling and no ability to add categories in WordPress.

Images Uploads: You upload images to include in posts, and you can also upload them to Flickr. Instead of images alone, it'd be really nice to upload videos and integrate with YouTube, Blip.tv or Vimeo. Online video is a medium growing in importance for many businesses, especially small ones which usually can't afford big production costs.

Share a Link: This task was the most confusing. Most social media participants use social networks like Twitter and Facebook for link sharing, or they use social bookmarking. But it appeared that "sharing a link" as a separate function meant composing a blog post.

Turn the Bullhorn Around

It's easy to forgive bugs in a service less than a week old. But there's one thing that is glaringly absent from Postling right now: the ability to receive updates and then publish them.

Though it looks like the team at Postling is working on listening capabilities right now, until they show up, the service will be of limited utility. In the near future, be sure to look for new features that will flesh out Postling as a social media tool for business.

Tip of the hat to Bre Pettis.

Why should I use Postling when I can use Ping.fm for free? A service that taps into 2 dozen more social services, has been around longer, has an easier interface and funnels all the responses back to me?

But the by far more important point is that social media only works when it's authentic, not when it is formulaic. And Postlings promise to share a single bit of information on a dozen social services makes that bit of information formulaic and uninteresting. I don't want to read the same thing on FB and Twitter and a blog.

I don't mind easy, but please, think a little further and come up with something as substantial as Etsy was when it launched.

I agree that Posterous is more casual and social and not aimed at businesses. I also agree that something that does offer unique features to businesses is worth a price (not everything has to be free). But is focus worth that price when the features aren't there? Focus is great, but saving time because videos go to YouTube and Delicious gets bookmarks and you can email posts and many other features may trump focus.

I'm not even sure how exactly Postling helps you update accounts easily. According to their website, you use Postling to post directly to your blog, then use Postling to post your Facebook and Twitter update to say you posted to your blog, then, if your blog post had a photo, tell Postling to post that photo to Flickr. With Posterous, you post directly to Posterous or send a post by email, and that's it. Your blog is updated, an update with a link is sent to Twitter and Facebook, and any photos are uploaded to Flickr; all of this happens in one step. I'm not sure is focus and being more businesses oriented trumps all of that.

Maybe Postling has more features than I am aware, and maybe everything is integrated beautifully with a gorgeously functional design and UI. But that is not explained well on their website, and what is explained doesn't make them sound very useful when free alternatives exist and do more.

The likely reality is that very few businesses need either Postling or Posterous. The huge majority of businesses are just looking to update Twitter and Facebook and make an occasional blog post. I doubt Tumblr and Flickr are even on the radar for them. So how time consuming is it to write a post and then write a Facebook/Twitter update that says "hey, go read the new post"? You would still have to do those two things with Postling, but you could do it from your Postling account. Is that really worth $10 a month?

With the popularity of helping small businesses communicate with their customers using social media, why can't there be a direct way for small biz to talk with their customers online?

For example GetSatisfaction and Uservoice make it easy for corporations and websites to get direct feedback from their customers.
Imagine how useful it would be for small businesses to have an online suggestion box account.

Paul, what Postling has that Posterous doesn't is focus. Business communities (esp. local businesses) are slow to adopt because it's unclear whether the tools out there are "for them."

I think Postling is applying the right strategy, one that creates the proper context and user experience. There are definitely a lot of bugs and a lot of problems with their experience now, but they seem to be focused on making improvements there.

So, don't see need unless there is UVP.

The Social-smart dashboard is customized for the particular needs of each company, allows you to monitor, manage and measure your social media communities, while also integrating your search and email marketing. You access all your channels through one dashboard - one login - and you can have multiple moderators logging in remotely. You also get a Social Media Strategy Checklist in order to make sure your social media is optimally set up for your business model. They also have a demo video you can sign up for.

This sounds like something that Posterous could accomplish. And with Posterous, video uploads are integrated with YouTube and Vimeo. Posterous also supports sites that Postling doesn't (Picassa, Delicious and others) and can be used with many Twitter desktop and iPhone apps.

I don't see one feature that Postling has that Posterous doesn't. The Postling website doesn't list any features that would specifically benefit a business. All Posterous would have to do is advertise they have more features and offer a paid version for businesses at less than $10 a month; that would make Postling irrelevant and give Posterous a business model, which is one thing that they don't have that Postling does.

Even if Postling is marginally easier to use (and it is, partly because it doesn't have to be all things to all people), it will gain adoption among business users.
By the time most of the business community even knows services like this exist, Postling will be full featured.
