StatusNet released today a cross-platform desktop client for its open-source microblogging platform - the same foundation that powers the Twitter alternative identi.ca. Windows, Mac, and Linux users can download it here. It features support for multiple StatusNet sites (including identi.ca), notifications, search and more.
Mzinga has announced the latest version of its SaaS enterprise social software suite OmniSocial, with improved control panel, expanded analytics, mobile apps and more. The new features were made available to customers yesterday.
Mzinga has amassed an impressive client list, including ABC, Ford, Chevron, Amazon.com and AOL. It says it has over 300 clients with a total of over 40 million users.
Cisco announced today the Cius, an Android-based seven-inch tablet computer aimed at the enterprise. The device will feature both front and rear-facing cameras, Cisco TelePresence-compatible video conferencing and access to applications such as Cisco Quad, WebEx and AnyConnect Security VPN Client, as well as access to the Android app store. The launch further diversifies Cisco's offerings.
Rhomobile announced today the new version of its enterprise-focused smartphone app development framework: Rhodes 2.0. Developers can use the now-free Rhodes 2.0 to build native yet cross-platform apps for the iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Mobile and Symbian phones using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
Last week the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs passed the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010, a bill now better known as the "Kill Switch Bill." The bill will now be considered by the Senate. There's no "kill switch" provision in the bill, but the President has had that power for decades.
Users of desktop-to-cloud synchronization service Nomadesk can now edit files in the cloud with Zoho. Nomadesk users can right-click on a document, spreadsheet or presentation on the web-based Nomadesk dashboard and click "edit" to open the file in Zoho. Changes are then synchronized to the user's desktop.
Salesforce.com, the world's leading SaaS vendor, is suing Microsoft for patent infringement, Business Week reported today. As we've reported, Microsoft filed suit against Salesforce.com for patent infringement last month. Salesforce.com has hired David Boies who represented the U.S. Department of Justice in its antitrust case against Microsoft.
This week NSS Labs released their Q2 2010 Corporate Endpoint Protection Products report. NSS has only publicly announced the two products it specifically recommends against: Panda's Internet Security 2010 (Enterprise) and AVG's Internet Security Business Edition 9. However, it takes only a quick look at Trend Micro's web site to guess how NSS rated Office Scan (hint: very well). Some vendors have protested NSS's ratings in the past, but like it or not NSS is changing the way security testing is conducted.
