iPad for Business Round-Up: Despite Android Tablet Growth, iPad Still Rules in the Enterprise

By Klint Finley / July 22, 2011 10:30 AM / Comments

This week the firm Strategy Analytics released research indicating that although Apple shipped nearly three times as many iPads in Q2 2011 as it did in Q2 2010, the company has fallen from a marketshare of 94% to one of 61%. That's because Android shipments have surged to 30.1% marketshare. Microsoft has a 4.6% share and RIM has 3.3%.

However: 1) Shipments don't necessarily equal sales and 2) Consumers may be adopting Android tablets not, but according to data released (PDF) by Good Technology, Enterprises were still activating iOS devices at a much faster rate than Android devices in Q2.

Zimbra for Android is free, but there is no support and no guarantee that it will ever become part of an official product offering. In other words, it's nothing you want to seriously deploy, but if you're both a Zimbra user and an Android user you might want to check it out and give VMware your feedback.

IT Poll: Which Mobile OS Will Be Most Popular in the Enterprise Five Years from Now?

By Klint Finley / February 14, 2011 07:30 AM / Comments

The days of enterprises choosing one smartphone vendor appear to be ending. Forrester reported last year that 60% of enterprises support employee-owned smartphones, and mixed environments are becoming the norm.

BlackBerry was still the most popular enterprise smartphone operating system as of Forrester's Q1 2010 survey. According to Good Technology's numbers, iOS is growing the fastest by far. But with more enterprise tools for Android on the market - including new tools recently released by Zenprise and the forthcoming offerings from Motorola and SAP - Android is poised for strong growth.

By Klint Finley / February 14, 2011 03:30 AM / Comments

Android use in the enterprise is steadily growing but IT managers have to rely on either ActiveSync or use a third-party mobile device management solution to handle security. Motorola and SAP both revealed deals today that aim to bring security closer to the device.

Motorola will acquire Android security company 3LM, which was founded by ex-Android developers, The Wall Street Journal reports. Meanwhile, Samsung has entered into a partnership with SAP to bring its Sybase Afaria product to Samsung's line of Android devices.
