Video conferencing startup Oovoo has named Louis Holder, co-founder of VOIP company Vonage, as its new Chief Operating Officer. According to a release syndicated to Trading Markets, Holder's background includes work on mobile video, automated financial trading systems and IP TV. In other words, as execs go, he's a media geek's geek.
Update: Days after we reported on Holder's hire, OoVoo announced that the company has hired a new CTO as well. That's some exciting momentum so we're making this a featured story.
These two new hires remind us that there's a lot to be said for companies like this; they might not be so high-profile but are doing good things quietly in the background. Does the world need another consumer video conferencing service? Isn't Skype enough? To say this market is too crowded already would be a mistake and we're glad that these experienced technologists didn't make that mistake.
There are, undoubtedly, lots of video conferencing services available already. There's lots of good reasons for them to exist, too. See, for example, the acquisition of VOIP and Video Skype competitor SightSpeed by Logitech last month. As even Skype Journal says, SightSpeed's high-quality white label technology and free consumer service will work perfectly with Logitech's business strategies. Far better, in fact than the crazy marriage of Skype and EBay. Is there a place for Oovoo like there has proven to be for SightSpeed? We suspect there very well may be.
As CISCO CEO John Chambers famously said two years ago, "if there is a killer app, it is video." It's still hard to argue with that today, and so it would be a mistake not to pay close attention when an industry mover and shaker like Louis Holder comes on board a video startup.
Oovoo made its first big splash when the company convinced a group of diverse social media rock stars to participate in scheduled video conferences for charity. The service supports and records video conferences on both Windows and Mac computers.
