Electronics manufacturing firm Plastic Logic hired John Chen as a Firmware Engineer. According to his LinkedIn profile, Chen was previously a Senior Software Engineer at Palm for over four years.
This experience at Palm should come in handy as Plastic Logic recently unveiled an e-reader that is due to the market in Spring 2009. The Reader is 8.5″x11″, thin, light and features a large readable display. Plastic Logic developed this proprietary technology, building transistors on plastic, rather than silicon.
The Plastic Logic reader differs from the Amazon Kindle that we've reviewed before, in that this unit is geared toward business users. The reader supports text and office files, PDF's and even special formats that electronically-distributed newspapers might use. Other handy features include an onscreen keyboard and the ability to draw on top of the display.
This has been a busy time for the company. Since September, Plastic Logic appointed Rik Thorbecke as its Chief Financial Officer and officially opened its new plastic electronics factory in Dresden, Germany. The company's Reader has already garnered numerous awards including DEMO's People's Choice Award, the Plastic Electronics Foundation award for the "most innovative development in organic electronics," as well as a spot on the Cleantech 100 List, by UK-based research firm The Library House.
Plastic Logic has offices in Mountain View, CA and is headquartered in the UK. With its unique approach to potentially reducing our dependence on paper, we can see why the company has received more than $150 million in funding from international technology firms and investors.
