Toronto.Globe.and.Mail.jpgMathew Ingram announced yesterday in his personal blog that he has been promoted to the role of Communities Editor, accepting the opportunity to build upon his extensive contributions to the print and online editions of the Toronto Globe and Mail.

Ingram has written an opinion column in the Globe's online edition since the site was re-launched as a breaking news site in 2000. Living and writing online since the early 1990s, Ingram has the distinction of being the first writer at the Globe to blog for the paper, and he was influential in leading the Globe to be the first traditional newspaper outlet in North America to allow reader commenting on a hard-news web site. Ingram also writes a blog for the Globe titled "Ingram 2.0", which examines the interaction between the Web and media. Ingram has a personal blog at mathewingram.com/work where he writes about Web 2.0 ideas and companies.

Ingram indicates that he intends to shepherd the Globe's continuing efforts to push the boundary of online news publishing in the face of changes that can feel "strange or contentious" to traditional media. A disciple of Web 2.0 principles, Ingram is expected to embrace the notion of media being a "conversation", and he clearly seeks to nurture authentic community as opposed to simply covering the content creators.

Ingram is one of the five original founders of Toronto's Mesh Conference. The others include Mark Evans, Director of Community at PlanetEye Inc, Mike McDerment CEO of FreshBooks Online Invoicing, Rob Hyndman, business lawyer, and Stuart MacDonald, founder of Expedia.ca.

Ingram joined the Globe and Mail's online news team in June of 2000 after four years as the Globe's Western business columnist. Ingram received a Bachelors degree in English Literature from the University of Waterloo in 1985 and graduated from Ryerson University's School of Journalism in 1987. After graduating from Ryerson, he was a senior writer at the former Western newsmagazine Alberta Report for four years. He then moved back to Toronto to work for the former Financial Times of Canada, before joining the Globe in 1994 to help launch the revamped Money & Markets section.
