Edelman Hires Chicago Web Specialist Blagica Bottigliero

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / December 3, 2008 3:04 PM / 4 Comments

edelmanlogo.jpgNew media specialist Blagica Bottigliero announced on Twitter this afternoon that she's joining mega-PR firm Edelman. Bottigliero lives in Chicago and has done interactive work with Orbitz, Purina and Maytag. For the past three years she's been working independently. This fall Bottigliero worked on an NBC crew that won an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Achievement for Alternate Media/New Media Interactivity."

Edelman is a huge global firm that has blazed significant trails in new online media but also faced extensive criticism for campaigns including the creation of multiple fake blogs for client Walmart and its work with clients accused of harming efforts to combat global warming. On the up side, the company's CEO is a very active blogger and Edelman employs Steve Rubel, one of the best bloggers on the web in any genre.

  1. Blagica is a both passionate and knowledgeable. What a great combination to have in this space, which requires both. She'll rock.

  2. If some cynic said that Change.gov implemented IntenseDebate so that they could have a Web2.0 presence without actually having to deal with what folk are saying I'd have a tough time countering that ... would probably cop out with "You can't impute motive" or some other lame crap.
I don't think Obama's web team is cynically manipulative. I think they're serious careerists who took what was representative (read: mediocre) from the Web2.0 toolkit.

It could be worse. They could have concentrated on spin and image management instead of *cough* what might be manufacture of consent.

Fact: appearance /is/ reality ... or at least part of it.
Problem is, as I see it, that those who earn their salt by manipulating appearance ... well ... at best they're opportunists. Danger is that they might be careerists, in which case they might be plugging their own agenda items. And given their privileged position that's just plain dangerous.

FWIW my "participatory deliberation" method doesn't operate primarily by enabling "just folk", though it does do that. It's primary mode is that it grounds sophistry ... it leaves rainbow-colored smoke looking like just what it is: fog.
Everybody's fine about going after the pirates, but most everyone forgets about the navigators and technocrats who empowered them!

p.s. I think I finally figured out why Obama soooo often passes by momentary opportunities for oratorical flourishes: betcha dewd is a good poker player ... bet he habitually plays his cards close to the vest. Shows what a person can do without pushing snake-oil.

  4. To anyone that knows Blagica (and I've known her since we were teenagers), this isn't a surprise. She's sharp as a tack and you won't find a more passionate and energetic individual when it comes to marketing & new media work. Edelman is fortunate to have her, and I'm sure she'll get a thing or two out of them as well. ;)

Congrats Blagica! I look forward to watching the next phase of your incredible career.
