How to Get a Job Using VisualCV

Written by Admin / December 15, 2008 11:37 AM / 0 Comments

Eli Neumann got a new VP job last month. How did he do it? He says that a multi-media resume he published using a service called VisualCV made a big difference.

"In most cases," Neumann reports, "interviewers told me that the VisualCV made a serious positive impact on their perception of me before our meetings even started." Eli Neumann explains how it worked for him (check out his VisualCV here) and offers some tips for getting the most out of a multi-media resume in the following interview.

VisualCV is a sponsor of the new ReadWriteWeb Jobwire, our site tracking new hires in tech and new media. Check it out to see what kinds of jobs people are getting, then consider setting up a VisualCV of your own so we can report on your next job too.

Jobwire: An online, multi-media resume seems pretty unusual. How did you present it to people?

EliN.jpgEli: I set mine up in the VisualCV site and forwarded the link to those firms and contacts that I chose to share it with.

Jobwire: As simple as that! So, in addition to your work history on your VisualCV, you've got a chart, an audio podcast about your sales strategy, a collection of the maps of all the countries you've done business in and photos of your hobby - underwater photography! How have people responded to these media?

Do you think they moved the needle compared to a LinkedIn profile or a PDF?

Eli: This absolutely moved the needle. It created enthusiasm in different ways. Some people started off asking me about underwater photography and of course shark feeding, and rapport was created, something that rarely happens with a text resume. There were a number of people that had obviously opened up the metrics deck and were clearly impressed with the approach I take in Leading and measuring organizations.

In short, folks start the conversation with a far better understanding of my background on the business and personal level.

Jobwire: Based on your success, what kinds of tips can you offer other people who want to use a system like VisualCV?

Eli: Get creative and unlock yourself from the flat, single dimension, text resume. Prepare your CV with all those assets that help explain all facets of your personality, innovative and creative sides. Build this with content that amplifies your successful professional work model.

Jowire: Is there anything else you'd like to share with us about your experience using VisualCV?

Eli: I went through 5-6 companies that took an interest in me as a possible candidate during my last job search. As I had not done any searching since 1988, I needed a new approach. I built this CV up, and found that even though I sent each of the companies my VisualCV and my text resume, almost all of my meetings were conducted off of my VisualCV. In most cases the interviewers told me that the VisualCV made a serious positive impact on their perception of me before our meetings even started.

We'd like to congratulate Eli Neumann on his new job and thank both him and VisualCV for their support. We hope you'll check out VisualCV for yourself and stop by the ReadWriteWeb Jobwire to learn about more great new jobs people are getting in tech.
