Pownce Team Joins SixApart, Closes Service

Written by Marshall Kirkpatrick / December 1, 2008 12:38 PM / 6 Comments

The team behind microblogging service Pownce announced on the company blog today that it is joining blog software company SixApart and closing Pownce in two weeks. The Pownce team says it plans to "come back with something much better in 2009."

SixApart is a great home for Pownce co-founders Leah Culver and Mike Malone, it's a big company with a lot of support for open standards and innovation - something that Pownce was known for as much as anything. Pownce never grew anywhere near as large as Twitter but its small team of developer fans enjoyed the service a lot. Pownce made frequent appearances wherever a new API was announced and the team behind it is sure to come up with some exciting technology at their new home.

Pownce's best known features included file transfers attached to messages, threaded conversations and implementation of the secure open authentication protocol OAuth, something Twitter promises to finally do in its next major revision.

Co-founders Leah Culver and Mike Malone are making the move, community manager Ariel Waldman is not. Given how hot community manager jobs are right now we're sure Waldman has her choice of many interesting places she could end up.

  1. Wow! Anyone have any idea how many users are affected?

  2. Peter - probably not a whole lot, but mostly developer types and the Pownce technology is pretty cool - so we'll see what they do at 6A!

  3. It's kinda sad that they are doing this to their users. I wonder how many will join the 'new' version they are promising in 09. Also makes me think whether twitter would have suffered a similar fate had the facebook rumours been true.

  4. The userbase of twitter seems much larger than pownce - but I am curious about the numbers. Sounds like tools will be made for migrations, but nothing automated.

  5. This is a really sad news. 2 nice products like iSandy and Pownce closing almost together.

  6. There's still byNotes, and it also adds geolocation.
