Today the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced that Peter Piot has joined the foundation's Global Health Program as a Senior Fellow until April 30. In his new role, Piot will "advise the foundation on its global health strategy, including its support for efforts to fight HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases".
Piot is a "distinguished academic and accomplished leader in the global effort to fight HIV/AIDS" and co-discovered the Ebola virus. He is the Founding Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and served there from 1995 until 2008.
The Bill Gates Foundation was started in 1994 with an initial stock gift of $94 million. It was renamed The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 1999 and according to Wikipedia is the 4th largest transparently operated private foundation in the world>
