Today President Obama announced that he has appointed two Silicon Valley leaders to a 16-person committee called the Economic Advisory Board. The board will offer the President economic advice during this current recession.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice wasted no time reinventing herself after her Bush administration appointment ended this year. Hollywood based literary and talent agency William Morris Agency announced Wednesday that it has signed Rice as a client. She will be represented by WMA chief Jim Wiatt and Wayne Kabak for books, appearances, lectures, philanthropic activities and "new business initiatives in the media, sports and communications sectors."

Senior Vice President in charge of such properties as Mail, Messenger, Groups and Flickr Brad Garlinghouse "has founded a Menlo Park-based software startup called WithoutStripes... details are so thin as to be virtually nonexistent". It is noteable however, that WithoutStripes.com "redirects to the homepage of Zimbra -- a provider of open-source email server software that Garlinghouse helped Yahoo buy in late 2007".

Ross Mayfield of Wiki concern SocialText announced an offer to provide a free SocialText account to aid employees who have lost jobs due to the downturn. The program permits any former employee and HR director of a company that reduced its workforce by 5% or more in the last year to create a Corporate Social Network for free. Also introduced, the Corporate Alumni Network will enable community builders the benefit of the success of others who have used SocialText to create community in times of economic mayhem.
International web standards organization W3C co-chair Michael(tm) Smith announced today, "there will be a change in the leadership for the HTML Working Group". Sam Ruby has been appointed as a new co-chair. He will be joining co-chair Chris Wilson beginning January 5th. Smith will return to his previous role as the W3C staff contact for the group.
When Ryan Kuder got laid off from Yahoo! in the February shake down, his account of the proceedings on Twitter was so detailed it garnered attention from all around the industry. The former marketing manager at Yahoo! struggled to watch another round of friends laid off this month and decided to use social media again to do something about it.
