The site, which many (including us) called yet another Twitter imitation, had only been live since last September but now redirects to the main Facebook homepage.

]]> Facebook's status update announcing the closure read as follows:

Thanks to everyone who tried out Facebook Lite. We're no longer supporting it, but learned a lot from the test of a slimmed-down site. If you used Lite, you'll now be taken to the main Facebook.com site.

The pared-down version of the social network was meant to serve dial-up users and those in third-world countries with slower connections. Facebook did announce another stripped down version of itself called Facebook Zero last February at the Mobile World Congress, but going to this site from a browser simply gets the message "Sorry, your carrier does not support zero.facebook.com."

We've asked Facebook if any other alternative will be available for slow-connection and dial-up users, but did not receive a response by press time.

Platform Wars: Netvibes Launches Facebook Widget In a cheeky move, Netvibes has released a Facebook widget. Both Netvibes and Facebook are leading Web platforms for widgets (i.e. mini web apps that can be plugged into web pages and sites). So Netvibes is neatly trying to entice Facebook users to use Netvibes instead of Facebook as their homepage. Here is an example of the Facebook widget that Netvibes has released:

Of course it only includes Facebook data, not data from third party widgets. To be really cheeky, Netvibes should find a way to include all your third party Facebook widgets ;-) However Netvibes has actually done very well, because the only thing missing seems to be Facebook's news feed - because Facebook does not currently allow outsider providers to access the News Feed. Given that Facebook is not very open (at least outwards), this is impressive. Also it should be mentioned that you still need to click through to facebook to go through your friend requests, group invites, etc.

]]> We've written a couple of times about how Netvibes and Pageflakes are taking on Facebook. Right now, their main problem is that Facebook has much more developer interest and so there are hundreds more widgets for users to choose from on Facebook. But as consolation, Netvibes now has turned the tables on Facebook and made them into a mere widget :-)

Big Question (Answered): "What Does the Facebook IPO Mean To You?" big-question-150.pngMany people are expecting Facebook to file for its initial public offering today. In what could be the biggest tech IPO in history, Facebook would be aiming for a $75-100 billion valuation. They are looking to raise $10 billion in stock.

Facebook is expected to go public under the symbol "FB," but it's unclear whether they will list on the NYSE or the NASDAQ. With $3.8 billion in ad revenues in 2011, Facebook is on a roll. But what does that mean to the typical Facebook user?

What Does the Facebook IPO Mean To You?

Get Offa My Facebook! SmartTwitter Cleans Up Your Tweets We get it - you have both a Twitter and Facebook account and you're too lazy to update each separately. What's the obvious solution? Use Twitter for Facebook to automatically import everything you say on Twitter into your Facebook stream. The only problem is every @, # and RT ends up on Facebook, confusing your poor mother. You don't want to do that to Mom, right?

SmartTwitter helps strip out all of the Twitter mumbo-jumbo so all the rest of your non-tweeting Facebook friends can finally understand what you're saying.

]]> SmartTwitter allows you to link a single Twitter account to your Facebook profile, posting whatever comes in on that Twitter account to your stream. By default, it automatically removes @replies, @mentions, retweets and #hashtags, though you can decide to allow any of these individually in the settings.

From the app's description:

Smart Twitter was written out of the frustration with the existing Twitter-to-Facebook apps. They either copied everything, or required an arbitrary hashtag to post updates. It should be possible for a computer to figure out which Tweets should be copied to Facebook and which ones should remain on Twitter.

While copying your tweets to your Facebook may be considered lazy social media practice, there are many of us out there who do it nonetheless. If you're one of the offenders, we strongly encourage you to check out SmartTwitter.

Brightkite Integrates with Facebook Do you want your Facebook friends to know where you are and what you're doing at all times? That's now possible thanks to mobile social network Brightkite and its recent integration with Facebook. Through the addition of Facebook Connect, which is quickly proving itself to be more than just a simple way to log into web sites, Brightkite users can automate publishing their location to Facebook.

]]> Last night, Brightkite announced their integration with Facebook Connect was now official. As you update your Brightkite status - something that can be done from any phone either via SMS or with a mobile application - that information is immediately sent to Facebook as well.

Brightkite users can choose to have their Facebook status updated and/or publish their location, notes, and photos directly into their Facebook News Feed.

To turn this new feature on, do the following:

  1. On Brightkite visit your Account Settings, click on the Sharing tab.
  2. Authorize Facebook by clicking the link next to all 3 steps.
  3. Choose your Facebook cross-posting options and click save.

Brightkite promises this is only the beginning and that's there's more in store in terms of Brightkite/Facebook integration. We imagine that means they'll soon allow us to bring our Facebook friend list into Brightkite and vice versa.

The power of this integration is precisely why Facebook Connect is rapidly being adopted by web sites across the internet. That, and the fact that regular internet users immediately understand what "Connect with Facebook" means. Unfortunately, "Login with your OpenID" still has them scratching their heads.

Facebook Wants You To Know All About Its Ads Facebook Logo_150x150.jpgToday Facebook launched a brand new page to explain just how its advertising works. The social network makes most of its money through ads.

This comes right after yesterday's announcement that sponsored stories will start popping up in the Facebook news feed. Sponsored stories are already appearing in the news ticker.

]]> If you pay for a product, you're a customer. If you don't, you're the product. On Facebook, you are the product. The difference between content and advertising continues to slip.

Facebook is interested in tailoring its ads to you rather than just delivering whatever it wants. You can click on the X if you don't want to see the ad that's being offered, and Facebook will deliver a new one. This is yet another thing to do on Facebook which operates as another way to keep you on the site longer.

Facebook already keeps track of ads that you've viewed and what sponsored stories have shown up in your feed. That information is available on the Facebook adboard .

FB-recently-viewed.jpg

Ads may help keep Facebook free, but will you accept them? Or, like a rebellious teenager, will you finally leave Facebook for Google+?

Will Facebook Messenger Shoot the BlackBerry (Messenger)? Facebook Logo_150x150.jpgIn a blog post yesterday, Facebook announced new features and improvements to its mobile application Facebook Messenger. The new update allows users to see who is online, who's on mobile and when the other person is typing.

New support has been added for 22 new languages on Android, and 12 new languages on iOS. Facebook Messenger is already available on iPhone (including iOS5) and Android, and now it's available on BlackBerry. Beluga, the system behind Facebook Messenger, was supposed to be the BlackBerry Messenger for non-BlackBerries. In an ironic twist of fate, that system has made its way to BlackBerry through Facebook.

]]> The launch of Facebook Messenger this past August was yet another step toward a unified communications platform for Facebook, giving users the ability to communicate with both Facebook friends and their phone contacts without having to decide which device or platform to use.

Now that this app has come to BlackBerry, will BlackBerry users start leaving BlackBerry Messenger for Facebook Messenger?

As with Facebook Messenger for iPhone and Android, the BlackBerry version brings in all of your Facebook conversations, making it easy to access everything from one place. The app stands alone. BlackBerry Messenger offers messaging with other BlackBerry Messenger-confirmed users only.

The announcement about Facebook Messenger came from Facebook engineer Lucy Zhang, ex-Googler and co-founder of the group messaging startup Beluga, which was acquired by Facebook in March, right before SXSW. As it expands, Facebook Messenger continues to build off Beluga's design - and this isn't the first time Beluga has been compared to BlackBerry Messenger.

Calling all BlackBerry users! Do you have BlackBerry Messenger? If so, would you be willing to switch to Facebook Messenger?

Facebook Rolls Out Security Changes, Including Ability to Generate Temporary Passwords Facebook has launched two security features today, aimed at protecting the accounts of those of us who access Facebook from public computers.

The first feature is a one-time password. To use this feature, you have to have a mobile phone number associated with your account. Then, if you want to generate a temporary password, text "otp" to 32665. And in return, Facebook will text you a password that can only be used once and that will expire in 20 minutes.

]]> The second feature is the ability to sign out of Facebook remotely. This can be useful if you've accessed Facebook from a computer that isn't your own, but then forget to sign out. From within your Account Settings, you'll be able to see all your active sessions, and so if you're still logged in via other devices, you'll be able to log out. This also means that if someone else accesses your account without your permission, you'll be able to shut down that login (and reset your password).

Facebook say these features will be rolled out gradually, but should be available to everyone in the next few weeks.

Facebook "Like" Button a Year Old likebuttons_worldwide1.jpg

It was a year ago today - April 22, 2010 - that Facebook unveiled the Like button, the catalyst it uses to drive its now ubiquitous open social graph. The Like button has been integrated on more than 2.5 million websites with 250 million people engaging Facebook externally.

In a status update on (what else?) Facebook's own Facebook page, the company said that that 10,000 websites institute the Like button every day. As of 9:30 a.m. Pacific, the status update had received 66,905 likes and 8,739 comments, with a lot of it in the form of general gibberish or completely off-topic to the Like button's year anniversary.

]]> We contacted Facebook for some stats on the Like button and platform engagement. Here is what they sent back:

  • Within the first three weeks of launching the Like button last April, more than 50,000 websites had added it. Now, since launching...
  • 10,000 websites integrate with Facebook each day.
  • More than 250 million people engage with Facebook on external websites
  • More than 2.5 million websites have integrated with Facebook (including over 80 of comScore's U.S. Top 100 websites and over half of comScore's Global Top 100 websites)
  • Facebook is integrated with the largest US comScore Media properties including: the Top 10 Sports properties; 9 of the Top 10 News/Information properties; 9 of the Top 10 Entertainment properties
  • 18 of the top 25 Comscore U.S. retail sites use Facebook
  • Over half of the 25 fastest growing Comscore U.S. retail sites use Facebook
  • Media sites were among the first to adopt the Like button, and as a result see an increase in Facebook activity. The average media organization has seen a greater than 300% increase in referral traffic from Facebook since the beginning of 2010.

The Steps You Should Take to Secure Your Facebook Account We have written frequently about the various security loopholes that are part of Facebook but never described the step-by-step process that you need to take to lock things down. Now someone has done it for us. Cameron Camp, researcher for ESET, has put together such a step-by-step guide to controlling privacy and security on Facebook. Reviewing this post it is clear that many of us aren't as secure as we want to be, and we're not just talking here about our exes or prospective employers being able to check up on us.

Camp covers the full breadth of Facebook privacy settings, including Facebook check-ins, third-party applications, login nuances and devices. He also shows users how to best secure their profile to avoid being hacked. Some of his suggestions make use of little-known security features. It is well worth following.

Translate Your Facebook Page Into Any Language Facebook Logo_150x150.jpgFacebook now offers an option to translate pages, including comments, into any language via a link that appears under public pages' posts. The feature works through Microsoft's Bing Translator, and is yet another example of Microsoft and Facebook teaming up to utilize the data-rich Facebook social graph.

]]> In May 2011, Bing debuted social search with a new Facebook integration that surfaces search results based on what a user's Facebook friends "liked" the most. By installing the Bing Toolbar (PC-only), users have the option to connect through Facebook, thus enabling the social search feature. They can also choose to opt out.

Microsoft's investment with Facebook has always been strong - they were one of the early investors in the social platform, so Bing has been able to freely integrate with Facebook as they please.

The new Bing Translation feature on Facebook pages is yet another step toward Facebook's bigger goal: to make the Web fully focused on social search.

Do you use Bing social search? How do you think Facebook's new translation service will affect Facebook's global reach?

Facebook Goes Extra-Light: Announces Stripped-Down Mobile Site Facebook logoAt the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this morning, Facebook announced Facebook Zero, a new stripped-down mobile version of the popular social networking site. Zero, which will go live within the next few weeks, will allow users on slow connections and basic phones to access the service through a very basic version of the site. By default, Zero will not feature any images or other bandwidth-heavy features. Facebook also plans to offer a more feature-rich version of Facebook Zero through deals with select mobile carriers.

]]> Given that over 100 million Facebook users now access the service's mobile site, it makes sense for the company to try to cater to the widest possible variety of potential users.

With Facebook Lite, the company already offers a very basic version of its service for desktop users on slow connections. This version is mainly aimed at users in the developing world.

If you try to go to zero.facebook.comfb zero not supported by carrierright now, this message will appear: Sorry, your carrier does not support zero.facebook.com. As Robin Wauters notes, chances are that Facebook plans to offer carriers the most basic version of Zero for free. Mobile operators will be able to charge for the premium version. It's not clear if Facebook plans to take a cut of these fees.
