We have been tracking Series A deals in Web technology since the market mayhem in October 2008, and since May we have been working with ChubbyBrain, which tracks this kind of data full-time. Early-stage funding is important for the whole economy, so we decided to report every month, not waiting for quarterly data. The executive summary for July: steady progress and a lot of deals in the Boston area. Read on for details.
July clocked in at $93.5 million, ahead of June's $77.1 million but behind May's blistering $103.2 million.
Here are the month-to-month growth numbers for seed and Series A deals in the Web and mobile space in the US:
Steady progress is not an exciting headline, but it is good news for the economy. To put it in perspective, this is double what we saw in that dismal first quarter.
Massachusetts was pretty hot with 5 deals, totaling $20.53 million. As usual, California led the pack with 12 deals, but Massachusetts (with 5 deals for a slightly higher average investment amount) definitely held its own. New York weighed in with 2 deals for $13 million.
Co-investors are shown on a single line.
