List of Legal Resources For Startups and Entrepreneurs

Lately on the startup blogosphere there has been a lot of talk about lawyers and how they relate to startups and entrepreneurs. A few weeks ago, Scott Edward Walker, a guest author on Venture Hacks, posted his Top 10 reasons why entrepreneurs hate lawyers, which prompted venture capitalist Mark Suster to write How to Work with Lawyers at a Startup.

Regardless of whether lawyers are something entrepreneurs should loathe or love, it seems as though a curation of legal resources for startups was in order. The following is a list (in no particular order or rank) of blogs, articles, websites, VC tips and other online resources for entrepreneurs and startups.

The best I’ve experienced are Joyce Colson and Rob Quinn of the firm Colson-Quinn in Boulder Colorado. Their focus is on new ventures and small businesses, and I regularly endorse them, because they have real world experience in the legal challenges a new ventures faces, both out of the court room and in the court room. They offer practical advice from a perspective of not only having created the legal construct hundreds of time but also having had to defend their work in court. Thus, their perspective is not just academic or transactional but also is influenced by the notion of having to stand up in court. For my money, there are no better attorneys for a start-up!

We have a lot of enemies already so I'd like to think that lawyers are friends of entrepreneurs :)

Seriously, lawyers can be very good allies in business, especially for start-ups who are just learning the ropes...and the legal stuff. You could get in trouble for the simple things that you do or fail to do.

So for start-ups, consult a lawyer that you trust and have him help you out in your business.

Agreed, this is a good list. Solo and small firm lawyers tend to be very helpful to startups and entrepreneurs also. Most have experience running their own law firm or small business and can usually provide great advice and guidance to valuable resources...in addition to legal counsel. Another resourceful list for those tech savvy entrepreneurs can be found on a site called feedmyapp.com.

Thanks for the information. I just started my business, a day care center, last year and the resources above is a great help for me. I started doing things my own trying to save some money but it is close to impossible to start a business without the help of a lawyer.
