There are more than 1,000 business incubators in the U.S. But there’s only one pro bono incubator. No, not a professional startup camp run by the U2 frontman. Which is probably a good thing, since Bono was named the 2010 worst investor in America. (OK, that was before he hit home runs with Facebook and Dropbox.)

Pro bono as in free. EvoNexus (which does sound kind of like a U2 album), is a project of San Diego tech industry association CommNexus, which launched the incubator in 2009 to stimulate the growth of new high-tech companies in the area.

When you're launching a business, you're always on the lookout for every possible way to cut costs. One of the smartest - or maybe the dumbest - ways to save money is to share office space with a bigger company. It all depends on how well you understand the dos, the don'ts and the special risk factors.

Today we're launching a new channel called ReadWriteStart, in which we'll profile early stage startups and entrepreneurs. As well as startup profiles, we aim to help entrepreneurs in the critical early days of a start-up. We are a startup ourselves, building a business without external funding in a tough economy. So we know the spills as well as the thrills.

In this channel we'll focus on entrepreneurs building web technology ventures. That is what we know best. Some of our writing will be valuable to entrepreneurs in any line of business, but we'll focus on the specific technical, financial, management and personal challenges of building a business online.
