New Survey from Fenwick & West Looks at Angel Funding Landscape

By Audrey Watters / April 7, 2011 11:35 AM / Comments

Since 2002, the law form of Fenwick & West has conducted a venture capital survey, a response to "the burst of the 'dot-come bubble' and a desire to provide the entrepreneurial community with objective information about the status of the venture environment." But recognizing that the funding landscape has changed - more angels, more Web startups - this year the firm conducted its first Angel/Seed Financing Survey.

The survey includes responses from 52 Internet, digital media, and software companies that raised money in the Silicon Valley and Seattle in 2010. For purposes of the survey, this meant those companies raising their first round, between $250,000 and $2 million, led by a professional investor.

What the AngelList Debate Means for the Future of Startup Investing

By Guest Author / March 1, 2011 05:30 AM / Comments

Over the weekend there has been some controversy surrounding AngelList, the network that connects startup entrepreneurs and investors. Before AngelList, investment dealflow was private and networks revolved around a few connected angels and VC?s. Since the angel network was created, transparent angel investing has exploded and entrepreneurs from any background can get funded.

To my surprise, VC? Bryce Roberts, a partner at O?Reilly Tech Ventures, was so concerned about the network that he deleted his AngelList account. In his post, Roberts says he was not turned off by the quality of startups, but by the investment philosophy pushed by the service. The predominate philosophy pushed by the service, he said, favors a light-touch investment style similar to throwing darts on a board, as opposed to a more concentrated approach.

By Audrey Watters / February 22, 2011 01:01 PM / Comments

Quarterly reports about venture capital investment are fairly commonplace. But information about early stage investment can be more difficult to come by.

To help investigate some of the investment trends, the Angel Capital Education Foundation (ACEF), Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and CB Insights are announcing a partnership that will produce a quarterly research report. The aptly-titled Halo Report will track angel investment activity in the U.S. and Canada, providing data that entrepreneurs and early-stage investors have long sought after.

Seedcamp Launches a European Version of AngelList

By Audrey Watters / December 7, 2010 08:07 AM / Comments

European startup incubator Seedcamp has launched a new online platform, Seedsummit.org, aimed at connecting startups with European seed investors. An attempt to create a European version of the incredibly successful AngelList, plans for the website grew out of the Seedsummit conference last year, along with the recognition that Europe needed a "stronger more cohesive network to support enrepreneurs."
