Android Had 43.4% of the Global Smartphone Market in Q2, Apple Third at 18.2%

By Dan Rowinski / August 11, 2011 12:15 AM / Comments

Research firm Gartner has released its study of second quarter global mobile sales and, to the surprise of no one, Android and Apple are dominating the smartphone market. Globally, smartphone sales were near 107.7 million, of which Android was the top performer (43.4% on sales of 46.7 million units) and iOS was third (18.2% on sales of 19.6 million). Between the two, they accounted for 62% of smartphone sales worldwide.

Nokia's Symbian is still clinging to the leader board, with 22.1% of the smartphone market on 23.8 million units sold. That is way down from Nokia's high when it controlled nearly 48% of the world smartphone market. Overall, Nokia is still the world's largest cell phone manufacturer, having sold 97.8 million devices in the quarter, good for 22.8% of the market. Yet, Gartner does not see Nokia's lead lasting into the third quarter and beyond.

Most Organizations Now Use Open Source Software According to Gartner

By Klint Finley / March 7, 2011 04:00 AM / Comments

More than half of the 517 organizations surveyed by Gartner use open source software (OSS). When the firm first started tracking open source in the enterprise five years ago, only 10% of organizations were using OSS. Gartner published the results in a report titled Survey Analysis: Overview of Preferences and Practices in the Adoption and Usage of Open-Source Software. This announcement summarizes the findings.

Decision makers aren't just looking to OSS because it's cheaper - they're also trying to gain competitive advantages through open source. "Nearly one-third of respondents cited benefits of flexibility, increased innovation, shorter development times and faster procurement processes as reasons for adopting OSS solutions," reads the announcement.

By Klint Finley / January 11, 2011 04:10 AM / Comments

Responding to the Quora conversation we covered last week, Gartner Research Director Lydia Leong published a blog post detailing the process of creating a Magic Quadrant report. " We lay this process out formally in the initiation letters sent to vendors when we start MQ research, so I'm not giving away any secrets here, just exposing a process that's probably not well known to people outside of analyst relations roles," she wrote.

Do We Need a Yelp for the Enterprise?

By Klint Finley / January 8, 2011 03:00 AM / Comments

Last month Gartner released its Magic Quadrant for Cloud Infrastructure as a Service and Web Hosting. The report positioned AT&T, Rackspace, Savvis, Terremark and Verizon as the leaders. Controversially, Amazon.com didn't make the cut as a leader partially because it doesn't offer certain features such as managed hosting or options for hybrid clouds. Amazon.com and many of the other providers ranked are focused on developers and on providing web services, not hosting virtualized enterprise applications such as ERP.
