When asked if he would mind his startup being described as "a Tumblr for designers and developers," Forrst founder and developer Kyle Bragger said he wasn't sure, but that he probably wouldn't mind. After all, that is precisely what his product is - a community where users can share their links, pictures and text in a micro-blog format, with a little Stack Overflow-style Q&A thrown in. This budding startup has quickly gathered a unique and loyal community of designers and developers that are sharing thousands of posts and comments each day, and today I had to chance to chat with its founder.
After the success of last week's ReadWriteWeb Mobile Summit in Mountain View, California, we are back with this week's best startup advice in the ReadWriteStart Weekly Wrapup. This week we discuss VCs and NDAs, balancing features between power users and newbies, geeky startups and how one startup shrugged off a lack of funding and made the money themselves. We also have stories about Diaspora, the open source Facebook alternative, as well as an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk about the bright future of geolocation.
Last week we asked you to send us your questions for our interview with wine connoisseur and social-media expert Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary and his consulting company VaynerMedia recently ran an experiment with the NBA's New Jersey Nets and geolocation app Gowalla (in which Gary is an investor) to see if location services could draw fans to games with free tickets. For all parties involved, the experiment was deemed a success, and the findings from it have provided a unique insight into the future possibilities for geolocationtional advertising.
On Thursday morning of this week I will be interviewing Gary Vaynerchuk, social media maven and host of the wildly popular Wine Library TV video podcast. You may remember we mentioned Gary a while back when reviewing his book Crush It!: Why Now Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion, a bestselling book on how to use social media to boost your personal brand.
Social media maven and "average Joe" wine connoisseur Gary Vaynerchuk is the author of "Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion", a step-by-step how-to guide for taking advantage of the Internet and social networking to create a powerful and influential personal brand. While any web savvy entrepreneur knows the importance of social media, this book is great for those looking for a crash course and an insider's view into what it takes to create a thriving business from a personal passion.
At the May 8 BIGOmaha conference in Nebraska, web celebrity Gary Vaynerchuk took a few moments to talk to us about his experience at the small-town show, his new consultancy with his brother, and the expected arrival of a new Vaynerchuk.
"People on the coasts get spoiled," Vaynerchuk said. "There's always things going on in LA, San Fran, New York. Not to say 'Omaha's lucky to have us.' Please. I'm not going in that direction. But there was definitely a great spirit in the room. People drove from two or three hours to be here. It was a very uplifting aspect."
Yesterday in the gorgeous Nebraska sunshine, about 300 techies, entrepreneurs, and creatives from all over the country gathered in a large but simple room to learn, listen, and make connections.
The one-day, one-track show was just a hashtag to some and entirely unknown to others; still, the pre-show buzz on Twitter and in various blogs had resonated with freshness, immediacy, and inspiration. A week before it opened, the first-ever BIGOmaha conference was sold out.
