Tales of Extreme Coding: Shark Week at BrightTag

By David Strom / December 14, 2011 3:00 PM / View Comments

shark-week.pngA blog post from the coders at BrightTag this week is instructive in how they responded to a "shark week." No, it wasn't giving all the developers time off to watch the popular Discovery Channel series (that doesn't mean I can't borrow their icon), but an opportunity to improve the performance of their code. The results were impressive: they cut page load times at least in half, and built internal test tools to make it easier to do more performance tuning in the future. The post describes who did what and how.

Picking the Most Important Features & APIs for Your Mobile App

By Chris Cameron / September 27, 2010 2:00 PM / View Comments

iphone_apr10.jpgEarlier this summer, we posed the question of whether or not native mobile applications would eventually be made obsolete by the mobile Web. Many agreed that the power of the mobile Web and cloud over native apps may be an inevitability, but according to a survey released today, four out of five app developers say their customers prefer a native experience. With this demand from customers, which features are they looking for most in a mobile experience? Here are some results from the survey that may surprise you.

How to Prepare Your Startup for Platform Expansion and Rapid Growth

By Chris Cameron / August 20, 2010 1:30 PM / View Comments

growup_aug10.jpgWhen taking a Web app to the mobile space, it's important for a startup to realize the tools and best practices available to make the transition smooth and easy. Earlier this week, social check-in startup GetGlue launched its mobile app on the Android platform after seeing unexpected growth from its iPhone app. Today I spoke with company CEO Alex Iskold about the ways in which GetGlue both did and did not prepare for the explosive growth it has seen from its mobile efforts.

Will Mobile Web Apps Eventually Replace Native Apps?

By Chris Cameron / July 5, 2010 12:35 PM / View Comments

appvsweb_jul10.jpgLast week I had the chance to attend Qualcomm's Uplinq 2010 conference in San Diego where I was able to sit it on several interesting discussions about mobile technology and its future. One of the sessions I was particularly interested in was a chat about the tools being created to improve web development optimized for mobile devices. Qualcomm engineer Bijan Amirzada showed off some interesting new capabilities within mobile Web browsers, but one assertion he made has since been stuck in my mind: will Web-based apps eventually dethrone native applications on mobile devices?

How To Lifestream From Your iPhone

By Sarah Perez / August 13, 2008 9:50 AM

Recently, we took a look at the growing trend involving lifestreaming and how more people are choosing to go this route instead of establishing a more traditional blog. But outside of certain celebrity lifestreamers like Julia Allison, the streams belonging to "regular folks" may serve more as a personal collection of content for your own reference instead of a site that's meant to draw traffic or readers. There's nothing wrong with that, though, and you don't need any special software to "lifestream" in this way either...all you need is a platform and an app. And there are at least a few apps from the iTunes app store that can help you get going.

By Frederic Lardinois / July 14, 2008 11:36 AM

iphone-logo.pngApple's App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch has been growing quickly over the weekend. Close to 250 applications have been added since Friday. As Medialets reports, at the same time, the average price of those applications has dropped. Interestingly, free applications are getting higher average ratings from their users than paid apps.

Cascada Mobile: Now Anyone Can Build a Mobile App

By Sarah Perez / July 11, 2008 6:20 AM

Last month, we told you about Iceberg, an application that allows anyone to be a developer by simplifying programming into a process that can be done via easy-to-use DIY tools. More recently, another company called Cascada Mobile launched a platform that does the same for the mobile world. With their new platform, Cascada Breeze, anyone can program mobile apps. This makes us wonder - is democratizing programming the next big trend for the future of the web?

By Sarah Perez / June 12, 2008 5:00 AM

By now, you've heard of Adobe AIR - the cross-OS runtime that lets you run rich internet applications on your desktop. We've covered several of our favorite apps in the past, as well as places to find new ones, but so far all we've seen are consumer applications. What about the business world? Will companies ever be using AIR apps on their desktops? As it turns out, many already do and they're as easy to deploy as Adobe Reader.
