Dude, Where's My App? 10 Web Apps We Wish Hadn't Disappeared

By Richard MacManus / September 11, 2008 12:21 PM / Comments

We track hundreds of web apps here on ReadWriteWeb. Some, like YouTube and last.fm, become our favorites and prosper. But others sadly close down, or whither away due to not many people using them, or suddenly stop working for one reason or another (the bills are too high, the RIAA gets on their back, the developer doesn't have time, or a myriad of other reasons). Here is a list of 10 web apps that are no more, that we at ReadWriteWeb miss and wish were still operational.

Today, MySpace announced a global partnership with Research in Motion (RIM), makers of Blackberry smartphones. The two companies have come together to create a new version of the MySpace Mobile application designed specifically for Blackberry devices. MySpace Mobile, which officially launched in March of this year, lets users interact with messages, comments, and friend requests from any handset with a web browser by visiting m.myspace.com. However, the Blackberry version of MySpace Mobile will not be a mobile site, but a downloadable app that integrates MySpace with the Blackberry to provide push-based messaging to users.

Talk To Your iPhone With New Voice-Recognition App, Say Where

By Sarah Perez / September 7, 2008 09:00 PM / Comments

We all know that when we're driving, we shouldn't be on our cell phones chatting away or, even worse, texting. Yet we do it anyway. The problem has become so bad that some states here in the U.S. passed legislation restricting cell phone use while driving or enforcing hands-free use only. California, for example, recently enacted a law prohibiting handheld use while driving (but strangely, texting is OK). Other states also have similar laws on the books. With numerous voice-dialing features and utilities for all sorts of handset models, going hands-free has been relatively easy. That is, unless you need to get directions.

For iPhone users, a new app called Say Where from Dial Directions can help you get directions and other location-based content just by speaking to your phone.

By Sarah Perez / August 20, 2008 11:58 PM / Comments

The iPhone has been making headway in its battle to become a business-ready tool. Obviously, the addition of Microsoft Exchange support was a big step towards being considered a viable alternative to the traditional smartphones used at work, like Blackberry and Windows Mobile. However, beyond simply supporting enterprise email, the iPhone platform has a lot of potential to cater to the needs of its business users, too.

Today, we're introduced to what hopefully will continue the trend of more "serious" apps for iPhone: LinkedIn.

Vimeo AIR App Coming Soon?

By Corvida / August 17, 2008 04:29 AM / Comments

We have to admit that we have a thing for AIR apps. Most of our most popular desktop tools include AIR apps. From Twhirl to Snackr, they help us do our job with style. However, AIR apps are not in abundance and missing from various sites and services. While we recommend uvLayer for Youtube videos, it would be awesome to see other services release their own official AIR apps. Well, it seems Vimeo may be looking to release there own AIR app in the near future.
