User Error Accounts for Most Google Docs Data Loss

By David Strom / October 6, 2011 7:00 AM / View Comments

Today the SaaS-based company Backupify released a report examining 100 random data loss events that were posted on Google App Help forums. They categorized the events only dealing with enterprise customers into a strict data loss, meaning that the data doesn't exist, and data unavailable at the moment it is needed. Their research showed that 89% of the issues refer to data loss, and the majority of these were wrong suspensions, when an account was suspected of sending spam or otherwise at odds with Google's terms of service.

Cloud-to-cloud social media and webmail backup provider Backupify is announcing this morning the imminent availability of a new service called CloudSight. CloudSight will render a customer's entire archive searchable and available for restoration with a single click.

"The [CloudSite] service gives social media and compliance professionals an automated audit trail of customer- facing corporate online communications across all major social media and cloud platforms including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Gmail," Backupify says. A number of different companies are providing similar services now, but Backupify's appears unique in some important ways. Update: Unfortunately, it looks like the day of this announcement Backupify has experienced some down time.

backupify150.jpgAs the recent story of Flickr's accidental deletion of someone's account, along with 3400 of their photos, reminds us: just because we've moved from the desktop to the cloud doesn't mean we can forgo backing up our data.

That's the service that Backupify offers, the ability to archive your information from a number of key online services, including Flickr, Google Apps, Twitter, and Facebook. And the company announces today that it's added the professional network LinkedIn to that list.

Gmail Becomes an App Platform: Google Adds OAuth to IMAP

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / March 30, 2010 6:24 PM / View Comments

You may or may not be excited by the acronyms OAuth and IMAP/SMTP, but the combination of them all together is very exciting news. Google Code Labs announced this afternoon that it has just enabled 3rd party developers to securely access the contents of your email without ever asking you for your password. If you're logged in to Gmail, you can give those apps permission with as little as one click.

What does that mean? It means mashups based on the actual emails in your inbox. If you've given a 3rd party app secure access to your Twitter account, then you'll be familiar with the user experience. The first example out of the gate is a company called Syphir, which lets you apply all kinds of complex rules to your incoming mail and then lets you get iPhone push notification for your smartly filtered mail. Backup service Backupify will announce tomorrow morning that it is leveraging the new technology to back up your Gmail account, as well.
