DEMO 2011: How to Protect Your Facebook Page from Spam, Viruses and Profanity

You learned long ago not to leave your computer unprotected against the elements of the Internet. You would never think of accessing the Internet without anti-virus software (hush, you Mac folks), so why would you leave one of your most important online presences - your Facebook Page - unprotected?

Today at DEMO, WebSense launched Defensio 2.0 for Facebook, a Facebook app that can help keep your company's Facebook Page safe and clear from malicious links, spam and profanity.

]]> Defensio breaks down security for your page into three basic categories: Spam, malicious content and profanity. For each category, you can set the app to either alert you, quarantine the item, or automatically delete it.

defensio-screenshot-1.png

Beyond these three basic categories and settings, the app also allows you to select a number of different website types to block from being posted on your page.

defensio-screenshot-2.png

Defensio isn't the first of its kind, however. Last October, we wrote about a similar app by BitDefender, which performed a similar task. BitDefender's app, however, was directed more at the average user, helping to prevent oversharing and privacy infringing activities, in addition to malicious links. Defensio also has a full moderation panel that allows the Facebook Page's owner to look through quarantined items and decide to either allow or disallow them.

Defensio looks to be more directed at small businesses and those of you with a brand Facebook Page. Would you want to stop your friends from swearing on your personal Facebook page? Maybe not. Your brand's Facebook Page, however, is a different thing all together.

How Rich Are the Companies of DEMO 2011?

Over the next two days at the DEMO conference in Palm Springs, California, more than 50 companies will take the stage and introduce their product in six minutes flat. It's a format that has become an industry standard, with conferences like TechCrunch 50, TechCrunch Disrupt and LAUNCH following in its footsteps.

A continual criticism of DEMO over the years, however, has been that the price of entry is simply too high. At nearly $20,000, the cost of getting on stage at one of the world's pre-eminent tech conferences can be prohibitive to say the least, so we decided to take a look at how funding broke down for the $1,000,000 in presentations we're seeing over the 48-hours.

]]> To examine the funding of the 52 companies crossing the stage this week, we used DIY database tool Needlebase to quickly scrape the DEMO website of all the funding disclosures and then sort the numbers. Of the 52 companies, we found data for 46 companies. Here are the numbers:

DemofundingSpread.jpg

52% of companies that disclosed funding disclosed $1m in funding or less. 85% less than $5 million. 32% disclosed between $1m and $5m, the most popular category. 10% disclosed $10m in funding or more. The most funded of the group is content security firm WebSense, which reported more than $50m in funding.

How does this compare to the Launch conference last week, which argued DEMO was too pricey for bootstrapped startups to launch at? Though the data is incomplete (we could only find funding data for 7 of 37 companies at Launch), it's worth at least a passing mention that the Launch companies that disclosed any funding on Crunchbase have raised an average of $2m each. That's roughly in the same sweet spot as DEMO.

Only 3 Days Left to Save $100 on Real-Time Web Summit ReadWriteWeb's first East Coast event - the Real-Time Web Summit - will be taking place on June 11 at the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York City. Be sure to register now as we are extending the $395 ticket price until Wednesday, May 26.

The Real-Time Web is a set of technologies that impacts almost every service, activity and application on the Web. Come to the summit to understand how it impacts you, your business and your next development.

]]> Attendees already include thought-leaders like John Borthwick of betaworks, Alex Iskold of Adaptive Blue and Anil Dash of Expert Labs. ReadWriteWeb also has a special rate for students. If you are a student and would like to participate, please email us at students@readwriteweb.com.

Why We Use the Unconference Format

"The RWW Real-Time Web Summit [in 2009] was excellent - friggin' great in fact. I hauled a handful members of my team across country for it and my only regret was that I didn't bring more of them. I'm looking forward to the next one."
John Borthwick, CEO BetaWorks - one of the leading investors in the Real-Time Web.
Two weeks ago we held the ReadWriteWeb Mobile Summit in Mountain View, California. The Real-Time Web Summit in NYC will follow the same unconference format, which we've gotten a lot of great feedback on. To see the power of the unconference format, check out this video that shows how session pitching happened at the Mobile Summit:

Watch live video from ReadWriteWeb Mobile Summit 2010 on Justin.tv

"[The Mobile Summit] was the best best best event I've been to in years, and I mean it. To be frank, I almost left ten minutes after I arrived, thinking that I was completely out of place. Turns out I was exactly in the right place all along. I left feeling completely energized about media, innovation, women in tech, new social models, and have so many new ideas about what I want to do next and what I want to get involved in. What I really didn't expect was to walk away with a pretty clear picture of what the future of mobile media (and social media) looks like. Now I'm staring at invites to keynote at a couple of tech events this year and hoping they're a fraction of the win that was RWWMS." - Violet Blue, sex educator and author

An unconference is a free-flowing, organically generated series of group discussions agreed on and led by attendees.

"We've all been to unconferences before, but ReadWriteWeb made it feel brand new. They pulled together a really good crowd, and their facilitation set the scene for surprising and thought-provoking conversations."
Ross Turk, Director, Global Developer Community, Alcatel-Lucent
This is our third unconference event and we think it fits who we are perfectly. First, much like the current era of the Web, unconferences encourage two-way communication. This generates new, actionable ideas and means that you typically learn much more than you would at a traditional conference. Secondly, due to the high quality of our reader base, ReadWriteWeb's unconference events attract an intelligent, influential group of people. So the networking is superb!

To get a feel for how thoughtful discussion happens at these events, check out the comments by Ted Morgan, Chris Saad and Ben Metcalfe in this video by Evelyn Rusli from TechCrunch:

We were one of the first news outlets to analyze the Real-Time Web and we've since written extensively about it. We also published a premium report on the subject last year, which featured interviews with 50 companies, developers and executives building or leveraging real-time Web technology.

If you're a company in the Real-Time Web market, you may be interested in helping to sponsor this event. Please contact our COO Sean Ammirati for more information.

The ReadWriteWeb team is excited about our first New York event on June 11th, so we look forward to seeing you there!

Rise of the Machines: David Wood on the Internet of Things mashup logoRight about now, Rise of the Machines, a conference taking place in London on the Internet of Things, is about halfway over. Earlier today, one of the speakers, David Orban, sat down with another speaker, David Wood, for a five minute talk about the current state of IoT. As the conferences progresses, we'll post more interviews by Orban with other key players who are at the event.

]]> Wood has a long background creating smart mobile devices, including a decade with PDA manufacturer Psion PLC, and more than 10 years as an executive with smartphone operating system specialist Symbian. He is now principal of Delta Wisdom.

Rise of the Machines: Internet of Things Comes to London mashuplogo.pngIf you like your Internet rammed into things - lighting systems, automobiles, art, books, crookedneck squash - you'll light-up like a Japanese robot when you lurch into the mashup Internet of Things conference in London.

To refer to the conference by its full name (my hand to God), "Internet of things: Rise of the machines" takes place off the Strand at the headquarters of the British Computer Society on Southampton Street. It runs from May 4 through May 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

]]> The Internet of Things is "hot" again, according to mashup. Well, here at ReadWriteWeb, we've known that for a while. Anything that enables you to core an apple just by thinking about it super hard* is something we are down for.

I'd hardly call an org that throws a conference named after a robot apocalypse deadly serious, but here's their more...sober definition of IoT.

"IoT is, in its simplistic form, tiny sensors that are embedded into physical things which are connected (wireless or wired) to create benefit from process change or data analysis. Underlying the IoT are technologies such as NFC, sensors, and smartphones. IoT focuses on either services that collect data and analyze the data and the output is information or services that collect data but also close the loop and affect the physical world."

iotconf.pngThe conference will be a "blend of keynote presentations, panel discussions and company demos" in the IoT field. Featured speakers include David Orban, Chairman of Humanity+, David Wood of Symbian and Philip Sheldrake of the Influence Scorecard Initiative.

*You can't actually do this, even with technology. You'll rupture something. Instead, read the 2005 CASAGRAS Report to get more background on the thinking and tech behind the conference.

Cartoon: Captive Audiences 2010.04.22.interrogation-thumbnail.pngHere it is 2010, and I'm still sitting through godawful, text-heavy PowerPoint presentations with cheesy transitions, pointless clip-art and (pause, Rob, and try to stop hyperventilating)... Comic Sans.

Speakers often focus on what it's like to be giving a presentation, but it's easy to forget what it's like to sit through one - especially the fifth or sixth presentation of the third day of a conference.

]]> You're sitting in an uncomfortable chair (comfortable conference seating has yet to be invented), probably wired on a combination of carbs and caffeine, quite possibly sleep-deprived from all that late-night networking, and trying to stay alert while passively listening to someone droning on at the front of the room about "paradigms".

Fortunately, I'm not seeing as many as I did three or four years ago. Word counts are often way down; diagrams are simpler and more effective; and slides, mercifully, take a back seat to the speaker and their story.

Maybe that's because so many people saw An Inconvenient Truth and were blown away by what Jill Martin and Duarte did... or because of books like Presentation Zen, Beyond Bullet Points and Why Bad Presentations Happen to Good Causes... or just because enough people have been to Beth Kanter's presentations.

Whatever the reason, I'm grateful, and so, I suspect, are a whole lot of audience members.

(Of course, the state of the art is constantly in flux. And if you want to see where presentations are going, especially in an era of Twitter-enabled audiences who aren't feeling so passive any more, you could do far worse than reading Cliff Atkinson's The Backchannel.)

8 Ways to Better Understand the Internet of Things IoT.jpgThe world's second Internet of Things Conference is scheduled to take place at the end of November in Tokyo. The deadline for papers was just extended to June 1 - which gave us an idea. Conference planners have put together a list of suggested topics for papers. We took that list and then rounded up our ongoing reporting and analysis for each of the eight topics as a way to help you understand how vast and far reaching IoT will end up being.

]]> 'Green by Internet of Things / Green of Internet of Things Technology'

Our recent list of 6 Ways to Better Living: Inside an Internet of Things Home, looked at the IoT from a domestic standpoint. From handling toxic waste, to watershed management, to building design, to transportation, to the smart energy grid, a whole new green way of thinking is going to be made possible by IoT.

'Future sustainable technologies linking the physical and virtual world'

Different industries have have already been able to increase the efficiency of freight shipping by using sensors to tell them the location and condition of their product in real-time. This includes FedEx's SenseAware, which is designed to constantly keep track of the vital signs of all its packages. In future posts we'll be covering IoT-driven growth in the fields of virtual factories, digital cities, agriculture and forest management.

'Novel services and applications to facilitate environmental responsibility'

Did you hear about the guy who wired his house up to a Twitter account so that it alerted him whenever an appliance was used? Following that experiment, Matt Morey figured out a way to use iobridge to turn that one-way Twitter alert system into a two-way system that makes it possible to turn appliances on and off via Twitter. These ideas, which may seem novel at first, signal the direction towards the development of whole new industries.

'Emerging Internet of Things business models and process changes'

Companies as large as IBM have invested heavily in IoT. It has a website called Smarter Planet, which is dedicated to "smarter solutions," of which they say they've already developed 12,00 hundred. We've also written about ThingD, which is creating a registry of things, as well as REZZ.IT, which is building a business based on the idea that "things have a network and their own audience."

'Communication systems and network architectures for the IoT'

Pachube is the IotT business that has earned the most coverage and analysis from us. Pachube is a service that stores and shares real-time sensor data from objects, devices, buildings and environments. MQTT, which stands for Message Queuing Telemetry Transport, is also noteworthy. It is "a platform-agnostic system which can connect almost any networked object to the wider world." More recently, Google launched an API for PowerMeter, which allows device manufacturers to create PowerMeter-compatible devices. Also worth mention is our article on Arrayent that aims to be the "Cisco of small things" - which is basically middleware for companies wanting to connect their products to the Internet. In particular it's targeting smartphones.

'Experience reports from the introduction and operation of networked things in areas such as healthcare, logistics & transport'

IoT is still so new that we have only just begun to see the results of research. But with RFID, for example (which is one of the more mature IoT technologies), we've reported on how there have been challenges that limit predicted growth. There's also still impediment to to the viable use of IofT-like location-based services.

'Emerging applications and interaction paradigms for everyday citizens'

From preventing lost luggage, to the latest IoT gadgets, telling the story of what a person's everyday daily life is an integral part of IoT. Most notable is the presentation by Carnegie Mellon professor and ex-imagineer Jesse Schell, who describes how sensors in everything may one day mean the sensor in your toothbrush gives you online gaming points if you brush for the full three minutes. He also envisions sensors that track if you are watching TV commercials and again rewards you with online gaming points. Core to Schell's ideas is the belief that these incentives may seem a bit creepy, but they have potential to help us create a less corrupted, more accountable and ethical world.

'Social impacts and consequences: security, privacy, opportunities and risks'

In our What The Internet of Things Means For You series we covered privacy issues related to the use of RFID and barcode readers. The latest reports show how advertisement, RFID and geolocation have combined to raise serious privacy concerns. Additionally, location-based data can be a threat to personal privacy in the context of how the U.S. congress has started to draft location-based privacy protection laws.
