BlogRize Relaunches: Google Reader Meets Digg for Blog Communities
When BlogRize, a blog community and aggregator, first launched earlier this year, we gave it a very positive review. BlogRize is an interesting mix between Digg, Techmeme, and ReadBurner, though with a stronger emphasis on individual communities around blogs (like the RWW community here) and recommendations.
During the last few months, BlogRize's founder Jesse Spaulding has been working on a major redesign of the site, which he is rolling out today. The new design features an enhanced voting system, updated ranking algorithms, and a lot of updates to the user interface that make using the site a lot easier and more fun.
Kevin Rose Apologizes for Sexist Joke on Diggnation
Digg founder Kevin Rose issued an apology this morning for statements he made on the latest edition of his video podcast Diggnation. Just after the 4 minute mark in the show Rose and co-host Alex Albrecht were making jokes about men getting into physical fights with women and Rose made a statement that a particular act of violence was appropriate as an act of retribution in some circumstances.

StumbleUpon Takes A Lesson From Digg, Starts Banning Users
Not even two months ago, social news web site Digg.com cleaned house and banned over 80 users for running scripts while on site, including those from Greasemonkey. Digg also banned others for allegedly promoting sites promoting products and services. Now we're getting word that the recommendation engine StumbleUpon may have started a "witchhunt" of their own, banning users of their service for stumbling upon the wrong things. What's worse is that they don't even seem to be responding to emails from the banned users who wanted to know why this happened.
Vanno Brings Digg-Style Voting to Company Reputations (500 Invites)
We have surely seen our fair share of Digg-style social news sites over the last few years. The latest entrant into this market is Vanno, which puts an interesting and novel spin onto the social news experience. Unlike other social news sites, Vanno's focus is exclusively on news stories about companies and Vanno then uses its community's votes to calculate a company's reputation.

Mixx Turns One - Sees Rapid Growth
Mixx, the social news site that competes directly with Digg, just celebrated its first birthday by announcing that traffic to its site has grown rapidly over the last few months and that it now attracts more than 4 million unique visitors a month.
These numbers are even more impressive if you consider that Mixx only had about 1 million unique in May.
Digg Doubles Its War Chest to Challenge Yahoo Buzz Internationally
Social news site Digg is announcing today that it has raised another $28 million from existing investors, bringing its sum total raised to more than $40 million. Remember when people used to tell stories about Digg rejecting VC money as too much in its early days? Those times are long gone.
The paradigm that Digg has popularized, letting users vote on which stories should be on the site's front page, is now found in any number of other places. From the programming geeks at StackOverflow, Reddit and Hacker News to the customer service requests at Dell Ideastorm, Uservoice and elsewhere - "it's like Digg for..." is now a commonly used phrase. No where, though, has Digg itself faced a bigger challenge than in Yahoo's new site Buzz.
Top Digg User Zaibatsu Banned - Reactions from Both Zaibatsu and Digg Management
There's more user unrest in the community of popular social news site Digg, after the all-time number 3 ranked user Zaibatsu, a.k.a. Reg Saddler, was banned for alleged multiple violations of the Digg Terms of Use. That decision is "final and irreversible", according to an email Saddler got from Digg today. JD Rucker of Social News Watch interviewed Saddler to discuss the ban - we have the exclusive audio below.

Has Yahoo! Buzz Lived Up to the Buzz?
Since our initial review of Yahoo! Buzz earlier this year, not much has changed about the service. At the same time, however, the perception, acceptance, and impact of the service has changed drastically. The service has shown that it can send enormous amounts of traffic (very talkative traffic), and has displaced Digg as the most active 'social news' community. In the process, they added widgets and rss, and most recently (and most importantly) have opened up participation to everyone.
Since they opened the submission process to everyone, the buzz surrounding the site has really been at a high. Desperate publishers and marketers who were previously locked out of the supposed 'traffic mecca' have joined the service in droves and have already started the practice of vote-begging in the hopes that enough votes will get them promoted to Yahoo's main page. Reddit Now Fully Customizable: Bring Your Own Design and Domain
The social news and bookmarking site reddit today announced that it will allow its users to completely modify the CSS for their custom reddits, as well as pointing those sub-reddits to any domain they would like. You can now also choose your own header image and replace the reddit alien with your own creation. After opening up the sub-reddits and open-sourcing its code, this is yet another radical (but logical) step, and reddit's users are likely to greet it with joy.
Digg Crowdsources Convention Interviews
Just in time for the first day of the Democratic Convention in the U.S., Kevin Rose today announced a new feature on Digg: Digg Dialogg. The idea here is to allow the Digg community to submit questions that will then later be posed during interviews with "thought leaders and tastemakers." The first person to be interviewed this way is going to be House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The interview will be streamed live online on Wednesday the 27th.
