securID.jpgThe recent security breach at Citibank, coupled with even RSA hiring what may be its first Chief Security Officer Edward Schwartz, point out that you can never be too paranoid about your personal and corporate data security. RSA was in the news earlier this year for an attach on its SecurID two-factor tokens, something that had been considered the ultimate in enterprise security.

It might be time to take another look at two-factor authentication, and see if it makes sense to implement this in your organization. Here are three basic steps to get started:

New IRS Rules Impact Online Sellers in the U.S.

halfdotcom.jpgStarting on January 1, many U.S.-based businesses and individuals who sell products on third party Websites are going to need to file a new form with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Sellers on sites like Ebay, Half.com and Etsy who earn more than $20,000 or process more than 200 transactions per year will need to file the 1099-K form with their taxes next year.

In 2010, we've seen the rise of so-called "social shopping" services. They rely heavily on technologies such as social networking, crowdsourcing and smart phone scanners. Here we present five of the main social shopping developments of 2010. This kicks off a series of posts that will be published over November and December, looking back on the biggest web technology trends of the year.

The Web has of course always had an impact on shopping, from the dot.com flame and burns (Boo.com anyone?) to e-commerce success stories like Amazon.com and eBay. So what's new in 2010?

eBay Debuts New Local Shopping Site

ebay_logo_150x150.pngToday eBay has launched its new local shopping site called GiftsNearby, while Google continues to hunt for a local e-commerce service after its $6 billion buyout offer was rejected by coupon site Groupon earlier this month.

The new eBay site integrates technology from eBay's acquisition of Milo.com, a local shopping startup bought by the auction giant for $75 million at the beginning of December. Milo, which calls itself the "anti-Amazon" helps consumers spot local deals in real-time by tracking the product inventory at over 50,000 stores.

'Tis the Season... For Mobile Commerce

As TechCrunch reported yesterday, mobile payments made between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15 increased 300% from this time last year, according to PayPal. The total mobile transactions for the period came to $13 million, according to All Things Digital.

Social shopping is a form of e-commerce in which you can share and access information about retail products through your friends or other users. Social shopping products often have a crowdsourcing component too, enabling you to get the best price or the most relevant data. Groupon, the site that offers huge discounts to local businesses, just sweetened the deal even more by partnering up with Ebay, the worldwide online auction site. The partnership brings Groupon's daily deals to Ebay with an added treat - users who buy the deal on Ebay get bonus Ebay Bucks.

Battle of the Barcode Scanners: eBay vs. Amazon

This morning, eBay announced its recently acquired mobile barcode scanning application Red Laser will now support QR Codes, also known as 2D barcodes. In addition, the updated version of the price comparison shopping app, available now in the iTunes App Store, will also incorporate eBay Marketplace and Half.com listings in its product results section.

This news comes on the heels of another big-name barcode scanning app update: Amazon Mobile. Only yesterday, Amazon announced its mobile application would now offer barcode scanning.

Though Mountain View-based startup Appcelerator has been working together for roughly 3 years, it wasn't until this past March when the venture-backed company launched Titanium to the general public. Appcelerator's flagship product, Titanium offers a platform on which Web developers can build native mobile applications that are easily portable from one platform to another. Today Appcelerator announced the passing of several milestones as thousands of apps have been built by over 65,000 developers - including many well-known name-brand clients.

Is A More Insidious Industry-Written Net Neutrality Proposal On The Way?

itic.jpgA an industry group made of dozens of high-profile technology companies including Apple, Microsoft and Nokia, announced "significant progress" on its recommendations on how the Internet should be regulated.

It will be interesting to see in what ways how the recommendations from the Information Technology Industry Council will differ from the "policy framework" put forth by Verizon and Google last month that reaffirmed basic principles of an indiscriminate wireline Internet but made an exception for wireless.
