Facebook Credits Update: Faster Payments, Greater International Reach

By Alicia Eler / November 18, 2011 5:05 PM / View Comments

facebook-credits-logo-150.jpegOn the same day that PayPal announced its peer-to-peer Facebook payments app, it also updated Facebook Credits, the company's virtual currency for buying goods in games and apps on the site.
Facebook Credits now includes a resolved known pay flow issue, updated payment methods for international markets and an updated transfer policy.

Facebook resolved a known pay flow issue that had significantly slowed payments. This issue dealt with callbacks generated by the Pay Dialog. Instead of receiving a callback "status=settled," which resulted in some users not getting what they paid for, Facebook told developers to fulfill orders after receiving the callback "status=placed." This cuts out the middle step so that orders will be fulfilled more quickly. On March 1, 2012, Facebook will eliminate the "status=settled" middle step all together.

Why are E-Cards the Main Feature of PayPal's Facebook Payments App?

By Alicia Eler / November 18, 2011 11:15 AM / View Comments

paypal_150x150.jpg PayPal is aiming its peer-to-peer Facebook app, SendMoney, not only to Facebook users who want to send money to each other, but to those who want to drop an e-card in, too. According to a recent study from Pew, 64 percent of online adults use social media to stay in touch with family. Grandma can send her Facebook-addicted granddaugther a birthday card along with a nice chunk of change. Dad can pass along a nice "have fun on me" $50 to his college-aged son after the lad finishes a hard week of finals.

PayPal and Facebook want to bring together the world's biggest social network, and the world's largest online payments company - and e-cards may be the bridge to making that happen.

Op-Ed: Why National Unfriend Day Is A Complete Waste of Time

By Alicia Eler / November 17, 2011 1:45 PM / View Comments

facebook-logo-1010.jpgToday is National Unfriend Day, a day for Facebook users to fess up to their social networking habits. There are two things you can do today: Unfriend many of your Facebook friends and use Facebook as an actual, completely manageable social network, or accept the many virtual friends that your Facebook network has to offer you.

Once upon a time, friends were people you saw often, maybe even every day. You had a small group of friends with whom you shared meaningful, in-person experiences, spoke with face-to-face and - gasp! - talked on the phone with. You didn't only text or tweet or post on their Facebook walls, you actually talked to them. Those were the good old days, right?

Now That You Can Make Facebook Calls Within Skype, Will You?

By Alicia Eler / November 17, 2011 10:45 AM / View Comments

Users can now make Facebook-to-Facebook calls within Skype. This new feature is available for Mac users with Skype 5.4 Beta and Windows users with Skype 5.7 Beta. If users chat one-on-one, they'll be able to share screens.

This new announcement is the inverse of the initial Facebook deal with Skype back in July, which let Facebook users make Skype-powered video calls within Facebook.

Is this the best of both worlds, or is this just another Facebook-Microsoft move?

What We've Got Here is a Failure to Communicate

By David Strom / November 17, 2011 7:30 AM / View Comments

newmancoolhandluke-150.jpgFans of Paul Newman will recognize his character's famous line in Cool Hand Luke. Never in the history of electronic communications do we have so many choices and yet experience so many communication failures. This was made clear to me recently when I tried to get in touch with a "friend" of mine. I put the word in quotes because I mean it in Facebook terms: someone that I may or may not have met f2f, but want to stay in touch. Let's call this friend Bob for simplicity.

Facebook Hires MailRank Co-Founders; Is It Getting Back Into The Email Game?

By Alicia Eler / November 16, 2011 2:45 PM / View Comments

Facebook Logo_150x150.jpgIn a blog post today, MailRank announced that its founders would be moving to Facebook in December. Is Facebook trying to revamp last year's failed email experiment? For now, the answer is no. Facebook is not acquiring any technology or other assets from MailRank. We reached out to a Facebook spokesperson who confirmed that this announcement only has to do with the actual hiring of MailRank co-founders.

Last year Facebook tried to get into the email game. Its Project Titan was dubbed a "Gmail killer" and gave users @facebook.com email addresses. Zuckerberg claimed that it wasn't really about email but still, users didn't bite.

Study: More Than 15% of Workers Get Hired Through Social Networks

By Alicia Eler / November 16, 2011 1:45 PM / View Comments

Jobvite-logo-150.jpgIn a survey released today, recruiting software platform Jobvite noted that more than 22 million Americans used social networks to find jobs in 2011. One in six people, more than 15%, say they found a job through social networking. Fifty-four percent of job seekers are using Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter for their search. Even though there's a higher job seeking volume on Facebook, more than one-third don't use it to look for work. There's far more actual job hunting on Twitter and Linked; almost all job seekers use LinkedIn for job hunting versus nearly 75 percent on Twitter. Overall, 86 percent (nine out of 10) job seekers have a profile on social media. Eighty-four percent of job seekers have a Facebook profile, 39 percent are onTwitter and 35 percent use LinkedIn.

Edgerank also examined shares and clicks by day of the week, and discovered that Wednesday had both the highest shares and clicks ratios.

Buffer Adds Facebook To Publishing Repertoire

By Alicia Eler / November 14, 2011 4:30 PM / View Comments

bufferapp150.jpgBuffer, an app that stacks your tweets and publishes them at the best times for engagement, has just added Facebook to its repertoire. Now you can either schedule your Facebook posts using the default posting times (11am and 6pm) or just pick your own. What sets Buffer apart from the other tools is that with it, you can use the buffering pattern feature (paid only) to do post time-release posting instead of regular scheduling. This is not something you can do on other social media posting tools like HootSuite.

Facebook Nearing Privacy Settlement With FTC [Updated]

By Alicia Eler / November 11, 2011 9:00 AM / View Comments

Facebook Logo_150x150.jpgFacebook is close to a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over charges that it acted in a deceptive manner in regards to its privacy settings, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal.

The settlement would require Facebook to receive user consent before making "material retroactive changes" to its privacy settings. It would also require independent privacy audits for the next 20 years.
