Changes to Facebook Pages "Likes" Means Marketers Need to Think

By Douglas Crets / September 21, 2011 1:30 PM / View Comments

facebook150.jpgFacebook allows users of its social networking site to comment on its pages without Liking them now.

This is a step in a direction that might make advertisers, brand managers and marketing people feel a little uneasy, because it means they may have to start thinking deeply for their brand rather than just counting hits.

Training Your Brain to Increase Productivity

By Chris Cameron / July 28, 2010 1:00 PM / View Comments

thoughts_jul10.jpgThe hot movie at theaters right now is the mind-melting thriller Inception in which thieves steal ideas by entering people's subconscious by way of their dreams. The thing about our subconscious is that it is at work even when we are awake and it can affect the nature and focus of our thoughts. For startups, maintaining focus on the most important goals of your company is imperative to success, and Y Combinator founder Paul Graham says he has learned to train his brain to do just that.

Looking for the Next Big Idea? Unleash the Beast!

By Chris Cameron / March 29, 2010 10:00 AM / View Comments

animal_mar10.jpgSo you want to be the next big shot entrepreneur to come up with an idea that will change the world, but can't seem to come up with that golden ticket of an idea? Well perhaps you need to look no further than the world of art for inspiration. While looking through Hacker News posts, I stumbled across an illustrated SlideShare presentation from San Francisco-based cartoonist Betsy Streeter that suggests ways artists can unleash their "creative beasts" hiding within - an interesting approach to creativity that aspiring entrepreneurs can also take advantage of.

Hunch's Caterina Fake On Fusing Ideas With Teams

By Chris Cameron / February 23, 2010 1:45 PM / View Comments

In our recent discussions of branding for startups and entrepreneurs, we've mentioned that marketing and branding is always harder to do when what you're trying to sell isn't a quality product. Successful startup products tend to fit into an equation involving the ideas and the people who are executing those ideas. Caterina Fake, co-founder of Hunch and previously Flickr, says that it wasn't just the idea that attracted her to Hunch; the people behind it were just as important.

Yahoo Tests New Front Page - May Eventually Replace My Yahoo!

By Frederic Lardinois / November 12, 2008 11:54 AM

yahoo_logo_purple_nov08.pngYahoo today announced that it is bucket testing a new design of its front page. The new design was built on top of the latest version of Yahoo's UI Library, which, according to Yahoo, will accelerate performance and give third-party developers the ability to easily create applications for the new front page. It is not clear when this new design will become widely available, but for now, it is only available to a random subset of Yahoo's users.

US Congressman Tries Digg for Politics

By Josh Catone / June 6, 2008 8:21 AM

Launched a couple of weeks ago by U.S. Representative John R. Kuhl, Jr., a Republican from New York's 29th District, the "Fix Washington" project aims to make DC politics a user generated affair. Noting that the majority of Americans aren't happy with the way Washington is run, Kuhl is soliciting ideas for bills until July 18th. Kuhl will then choose his favorite 5 submissions and users will vote for the best, and the winning idea will be introduced on the floor of the US House of Representatives. It's a novel idea, certainly, but is it a good one?

Government 2.0: The Government as a Platform

By Josh Catone / May 23, 2008 12:14 PM

TechPresident points to and interesting article today from the Yale Journal of Law & Technology (draft version of article set to appear in 2008-2009 Fall Issue) that proposes a new form of open government that encourages the closure of government web sites. The idea is that US government web sites are so notoriously bad, they should just be torn down in favor of private sector alternatives. But this is more than just a privatization push, this is about turning the government into a data platform.

With All Else Failing, Starbucks Tries Social Media

By Muhammad Saleem / April 1, 2008 11:00 AM

With Starbucks' stock beaten down from its mighty highs of $47 to recent lows of $17 in the face of strong competition from Peet's, Caribou, McDonald's, and Dunkin' Donuts and a suffering economy, the coffee house chain has made many changes over the past few months. From eliminating jobs and reshuffling management to permanently shutting down lagging stores and retraining its baristas, perhaps none of these moves will be as important or effective in the long run as the development and launch of My Starbucks Idea.

Genius Idea: Wants For Sale

By Josh Catone / December 25, 2007 5:30 AM

Along the lines of Million Dollar Homepage in the "that'll never work... will it?" category, 2007 saw the successful launch of Wants For Sale. The innovative project by New York artist Justin Gignac and his girlfriend Christine might just be my favorite idea of the year.
