Using Light, Intel Confirms Data Will Be Sent Wayyy Faster in the Near Future

By Adrianne Jeffries / July 27, 2010 10:00 AM / Comments

Intel announced a prototype technology today capable of moving data at 50 Gbps, comparable to sending an entire HD movie in one second - foreshadowing faster, longer data connections that could be revolutionary for consumers and data center users.

The prototype represents an important advance in Intel's research into silicon photonics - using lasers instead of electrons to send data - which the company has been working on for years. Intel hopes to scale up the technology until it reaches speeds close to a terabit per second - fast enough to transfer a copy of the entire contents of a typical laptop in one second, the company said.

Intel Announces Android Ported to Atom Chips

By Sarah Perez / April 15, 2010 12:23 AM / Comments

Apple sold over 500,000 iPads in its first week, but that trend doesn't have execs at Intel convinced that the iPad is at all ushering in a new era of tablet computing. Speaking to the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, David Perlmutter, co-general manager of Intel's Architecture Group, seemed a bit down about the whole touch-based computing thing. "These new categories are hard to predict," he said, and then went on to talk about how well netbooks were doing.

What has us confused about this negative sentiment isn't the fact that Intel downplayed the tablet market - after all, its chips aren't present in a good many of the tablets emerging now on the market. It's that they came at the same time as a rather important announcement from the chip giant: Intel has ported Google's Android operating system to its Atom microprocessor.
