iPad SchmiPad: Who Needs Another Device?

By Mike Melanson / April 2, 2010 03:33 AM / Comments

I think I've decided - the iPad just isn't for me. I move around too much. I'm an on-the-go type of guy, and for that I've already found my two trusty devices - my 12" netbook and my iPhone. Between the two, I have everything I need, but maybe that's the problem with all of us techies, tech writers and early adopters, us serious content creators and code-o-philes, looking at and reviewing these new devices: they're just not for us.

Life's Too Short: I'm Getting an iPad Right Away

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / April 2, 2010 03:17 AM / Comments

I waited for a year to get an iPhone, and I lost out on a year's worth of opportunities to use one as a result. I have one now and I still marvel at it almost every time I touch it. I expect to have a similar experience with the iPad - so I'm not going to wait. I want a full touchscreen, app-rich experience now.

The iPad may be better for content consumption than creation, but I'm not ashamed to say I like to consume content with a good portion of my time. (Thanks for reading this blog I write on for a living, by the way, content consumers!) The experience may be better in a year, but I'm willing to pay for 70% of the ideal functionality today instead of getting nothing for a year. Here's what I'm excited to use it for.

What's a "Universal" iPad App and How Do You Use It?

By Sarah Perez / April 2, 2010 01:52 AM / Comments

Do you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch and are planning on buying an iPad, too? Then you need to know about the new "universal" applications now available in the iTunes App Store. These combo apps for Apple's line of mobile devices are basically "buy one, get one free" deals except for one small difference - both apps are bundled into one download. When you run the universal application on a small-screened device, you'll see the iPhone version and when you run the app on your iPad, you'll see the larger, iPad-only version. And these won't just be blown up, oversized iPhone apps either - they'll be custom designed apps made specifically for the iPad.

iPad's Top Apps and Early Trends

By Sarah Perez / April 2, 2010 12:21 AM / Comments

What applications are the earliest testers of the Apple iPad trying out? Even though the "official" launch day for the new slate touchscreen computer isn't until tomorrow, April 3rd, several journalists and even some celebrities have already got their hands on one. And what are the top applications for folks like this? There are the usual suspects, of course: The Wall St. Journal, iBooks, Netflix (yes, it was true!), USA Today, ABC Player, NYT Editors' Choice, NPR and others. But all these apps are free, big-name brands and precisely the sorts of things the iPad was designed for. What's more interesting is a glance at the paid applications list for the iPad.

Developer Support for iPad Spikes

By Curt Hopkins / April 1, 2010 01:20 PM / Comments

Flurry, the analytics firm for mobile applications, has released an updated snapshot of iPad developer activities.

Flurry's Peter Farago broke it down on the Flurry blog.

"iPad made up 22% of new projects starts within Flurry over the last 60 days. In March, over 3,000 unique applications were created within Flurry. A second point of interest is that Android's share of new project starts has decreased from 18% to 8%."

15 iPad Apps We Can't Wait to Download

By Frederic Lardinois / April 1, 2010 12:16 PM / Comments

Slightly ahead of schedule and to the surprise of many developers, Apple opened up the iPad store earlier today. As of now, there are already over 2,000 iPad apps available for instant download in the store. Some are iPad-only apps, but there is also a large number of universal iPad and iPhone apps that include versions for both devices.

Here at ReadWriteWeb, we are obviously very excited about the launch of the iPad store and have been scouring the App Store for the most interesting apps. Here are some of our favorites apps so far.

Worried About Flash on the iPad? Apple Tries to Ease Your Fears

By Sarah Perez / April 1, 2010 02:27 AM / Comments

Will popular websites, especially those from news and entertainment companies, work on the iPad? Apple, in an arguably brilliant PR effort now has an answer: an online collection of iPad-Ready sites.

The Cupertino-based maker of iPods and iPhones made a bold, potentially Internet-changing decision when it decided that the upcoming slate computer known as the Apple iPad would not support Adobe Flash technology. This browser plugin, used across the Web for everything from streaming video to casual games, is slowly being phased out by HTML5, the next revision of the core markup language used in the creation of Web pages. The video support included in the upcoming Web standard requires no downloadable, installable plugin in order to work. But HMTL5 is still new, and details - including what video codec it will support - have not been ironed out.

Netflix for the iPad: April Fools Joke or Breaking Story?

By Mike Melanson / April 1, 2010 01:55 AM / Comments

The news is all over the Web - Netflix is coming to the iPad! For all of you doubters and naysayers, you can put away your beloved netbooks, laptops and miniature iPads (iPhones) and...oh, wait, is this true? It might all be an April Fool's Day joke that's getting repeated by trusted media around the Web?

But this Netflix on the iPad thing is the perfect example of how half-believable information can be put out there and repeated and repeated until everyone thinks it's true. And it might be.

The iPad in Education: Colleges Give iPads to All Incoming Students

By Frederic Lardinois / March 30, 2010 03:34 AM / Comments

Seton Hill University plans to give every first year undergraduate student a 13" MacBook and an iPad. Just last month, George Fox University in Oregon also announced that it plans to give its new students a choice between a MacBook or an iPad. The question, though, is if programs like this aren't a bit premature, given that nobody has actually used the device yet and that we don't really know how well the iPad will work for textbooks and other school-related activities.
