By Frederic Lardinois / February 12, 2009 12:31 PM / View Comments

myspace_logo_feb09.pngMySpace and Facebook are currently locked in a fight for the top position among social networks. In the U.S., Facebook definitely has the momentum going for it, but there is also clearly some life left in MySpace. We just received the latest data from MySpace, which argues that the site saw a significant spike in user engagement last month. At the same time, though, while overall page views were up, the number of unique users only remained stable.

By Rick Turoczy / February 12, 2009 1:00 AM / View Comments

facebookMySpace.jpgBrett Brewer, who co-founded InterMix Media - the company that developed MySpace - and turned a tidy profit when that company and MySpace were sold to NewsCorp for $580 million, says MySpace's ongoing battle for social network supremacy with Facebook won't last much longer. In his opinion, Facebook has already won - but it won't remain a winner for long.

The next time you find your desire to write lacking, Plinky may be just the inspiration you need.

Jinni: Wants to be Pandora for Movies

By Richard MacManus / January 22, 2009 10:15 PM

We're currently running a series of posts about recommendation technologies and in the comments of our last post about the Netflix Prize, a company called Jinni made itself known. Jinni is a kind of 'Pandora for movies', because it aims to recommend movies and tv shows to you based on its Movie Genome (aping Pandora's Music Genome Project). Jinni's genome project contains over two thousand "genes" that describe plot, mood, style, setting, soundtrack and more. Jinni says that its ontology was created by film professionals - much like Pandora employs people to create its unique music database.

By Sarah Perez / January 16, 2009 6:15 AM

The share of adult internet users who are involved in social networking online has more than quadrupled in the past four years in the U.S. In 2005, only 8% of adults had a social network profile. As of December 2008, that number was 35%. What motivates those in older generations to go online? Is it the opportunity to professionally network with their colleagues? The answer may surprise you.

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / January 9, 2009 10:36 AM

FacebookFeed.jpgLast night at the offices of blogging software company Six Apart, engineers and social media specialists from a number of companies large and small met to discuss proposed standards for the future of "activity streams" - the system of displaying recent activities of your friends online. Think Facebook Newsfeed, the basic format of FriendFeed, or the kinds of update chronicles we're seeing now on almost every social network around the web.

By Frederic Lardinois / December 11, 2008 1:45 PM

Among these social networkers, Facebook is quickly catching up to MySpace, though iMeem, LastFM, Digg, and LiveJournal are also very popular with college students. The report also compares the online habits of these social networkers with those broadband subscribers who choose not to contribute to social media sites and finds a number of very interesting differences.

MySpaceID: MySpace Sides with the Open Stack

By Rick Turoczy / December 8, 2008 10:50 PM

myspaceIDA few months ago, MySpace began to reveal details about its answer to Facebook Connect - MySpace Data Availability. At the time, we were left to guess what the offering would contain. What we did know was that - in stark contrast to the proprietary nature of Facebook Connect - MySpace had chosen to rely on the Open Stack, using OpenSocial, OAuth, and OpenID to build its service. Now, MySpace has released that functionality - renamed MySpaceID - and, in so doing, it has helped Open Standards take another step forward, as well.

Social Network Profile Costs Woman College Degree

By Sarah Perez / December 5, 2008 6:05 AM

Forget losing your job, apparently your MySpace or Facebook profile and photos can now cause you to lose your degree. In what may be one of the most frightening rulings regarding social networks and privacy to date, a federal judge has ruled against a former student of Millersville University of Pennsylvania who was denied her college degree because of an unseemly online photo and its accompanying caption found on her social network profile.
