[Poll] What Is Facebook's Best Mobile Monetization Strategy?

By Dan Rowinski / February 3, 2012 8:30 AM / View Comments

You would think that a company with 423 million monthly active mobile users would find a way to squeeze some revenue out of them. Easier said than done. The biggest question to come out of Facebook's S-1 filing for its IPO was how the company could monetize its robust mobile app ecosystem. How will Facebook do it? Stitching in mobile banner ads is not likely a solution for Facebook. We explore Facebook's opportunities and ask for your opinion in this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

[Poll] Does An Open Source webOS Have A Legitimate Future?

By Dan Rowinski / January 27, 2012 11:30 AM / View Comments

This week, Hewlett-Packard announced the open source roadmap for webOS along with the next edition of its application framework, Enyo 2.0. As we wrote yesterday, the time for webOS to shine may lie ahead. What it comes down to is how well the open source community responds to webOS and whether or not the original equipment manufacturers will ever decide to build webOS devices.

The favorable response of the community and OEMs is not guaranteed. Many think webOS is as dead an operating system as Aramaic is a language. That may include former Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein who is leaving HP after his commitment to the company elapsed. Is there still potential for webOS and Enyo or have we seen the last of the once-promising mobile operating system? That is the topic of this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

Poll: Which is More Passé, CES News or TV News?

By Scott M. Fulton, III / January 13, 2012 10:00 AM / View Comments

NBC peacock (1958, 150 sq).jpgIn a live poll published by CNBC.com yesterday, readers were asked whether the tightening of technology product cycles is rendering the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas passé. After some 1,471 votes were cast, some 62% of respondents voted yes.

When my colleague David Strom pointed it out to us here at ReadWriteWeb, I made one of my artificially erudite remarks: I wonder how many RWW readers, I said, would consider CNBC passé?

Poll: What Does Android "Clopen" Mean, Really?

By Dan Rowinski / January 6, 2012 11:45 AM / View Comments

There is a new word making the rounds in technology circles that has caused a stir this week: "clopen." The nature of clopen is that a platform is ostensibly open to be built upon but it must while also creating a profit for the company providing the platform. The clopen argument this week has centered around Android with the fundamental question: How open is Android, really?

Android is open source. Even by the most traditional definitions, the mobile operating system open for developers, manufacturers, carriers, custom ROM builders and hobbyists to build upon. From a consumer perspective, the nature of Android "openness" is cloudy. Is Android "clopen?" Answer for yourself in this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

Poll: Will HTML5 Web Apps Eventually Dominate the Mobile Market?

By Dan Rowinski / August 26, 2011 7:30 AM / View Comments

Within the next year or so, a flood of HTML5-based Web apps will be coming to mobile devices. It will likely start with games and dedicated applications like e-readers and move to more general use apps like news sites. Companies like Facebook and Amazon will be at the tip of the spear. The next wave will be sophisticated developers that see the power of HTML5 as an alternative to the native application model.

It is not a foregone conclusion, but the rise of Web app stores is a likely future. Facebook's so-called "Project Spartan" may be driving the shift but other outlets such as news companies may be looking for a way to skirt the strict rules of the Apple App Store or the chaos of the Android Market and create their own centralized hubs for magazine-like Web apps as digital newsstands. Looking ahead, will Web app stores become the dominant model? That is the question for this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

Poll: What Is the Next Mobile OS or Device Line on the Chopping Block?

By Dan Rowinski / August 19, 2011 7:30 AM / View Comments

It has been a big week in the mobile business market place. First, Nokia says Symbian will be discontinued in North America and the anticipated N9 running MeeGo will not make it to U.S. shores. Then Google buys Motorola on Monday and the environment goes into crazy with talk about patents and Android ecosystem fallout. Yesterday, HP admits it struck out with its acquisition of webOS and has hundreds of thousands HP TouchPads sitting in stock rooms across the country.

It is a volatile market and one that is being dominated by Apple and Android, to the detriment of all other comers in the space. It begs the question: what is the next mobile operating system or line of devices on the chopping block? That is the topic of this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

By Sarah Perez / July 29, 2011 9:20 AM / View Comments

Html5 150x150With today's launch of PhoneGap 1.0, a framework that allows developers to build mobile apps using Web standards, it seemed like a good time to put up a poll about HTML as an app platform. HTML, and in particular, HTML5, has come a long way to addressing the needs of cross-platform development by delivering a platform where apps can run on any modern browser. But is it ready yet for you? How do you use HTML when building your apps? Or do you?

Share your thoughts on HTML as an app platform in this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.

Poll: What Services Do You Use for In-App Purchases?

By Sarah Perez / July 15, 2011 9:54 AM / View Comments

In app purchase 150x150In-app purchases for upgrades, virtual goods and more, are an increasingly popular way for developers to monetize mobile applications, as opposed to making the app a paid download. This is especially true for Android, where paid apps don't perform as well.

In addition to the programs provided by platform makers like Apple and Google, there are a number of third parties that offer similar services. In this week's ReadWriteMobile poll, we want to know which programs you've tried, which you use and which you like or dislike.

oracleweeklypollchart.png We've talked a lot about the consumerization of IT and the post-PC era here. According to Forrester, nearly 60% of enterprises already officially support employee owned smartphones and, according to Unisys, employee-owned devices are a lot more common than enterprises realize.

What about your organization? Do you officially support employee owned devices?

Weekly Poll: What Was RIM's Biggest Mistake?

By Sarah Perez / July 1, 2011 9:14 AM / View Comments

As I'm sure you all know by now, an anonymous "open letter" from a RIM employee appeared on the Web this week, begging the company's management to change direction. In the letter, which RIM itself weakly replied to here, the employee suggests several things that have gone wrong at the company in recent months, both involving internal struggles and external perceptions.

What do you think have been the biggest issues influencing RIM's downturn? Share your thoughts in this week's ReadWriteMobile poll.
