Mixx Launches Innovative API - Continues to Challenge the Digg Experience

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / April 30, 2008 10:14 AM

The mainstream media backed social news site Mixx announced today the availability of its new Application Programming Interface and the offering gives developers an opportunity to do things that no other social news site has done so far. The API will allow news items and media to be viewed, submitted and commented on from any other site around the web.

Mixx is a service that lets users vote on top news stories. Though far, far smaller than Digg, Mixx has innovated at a pace that makes Digg look like it's standing still.

Sk*rt is Over, Long Live Sk*rt: Women's Site Holds Vote for New Company Name

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / April 29, 2008 6:41 PM

skirtlogo.jpgSk*rt, the small but quickly growing Digg-style site for women, announced tonight that it's changing its name and is asking its users to vote for what the new site will be called. The much smaller and just-a-touch younger women's magazine Skirt.com has been trying to get its hands on the Sk-rt.com domain name for some time and clearly the name is an odd one anyway (I like it, but so goes life). Regardless of why the name is being changed, it's pretty cool that the company is deciding with a vote.

How Best to Submit Our (Or Any) Stories to Digg

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / April 28, 2008 4:01 PM

diggsubmission.jpgSocial news site Digg has long been the big kahuna of sites where users submit and vote on tech news stories. Though tech content there has dropped dramatically (as we wrote about in this post) and Yahoo Buzz promises audiences that dwarf Digg's - it's still fantastic to get a tech story on the front page of Digg.

We get enough of our stories submitted that we thought friends of RWW might appreciate a chance to read our thoughts about what works best when you submit content from this, or any other site, for other people to read on Digg.

The Decline and Fall of Tech on Digg

By Richard MacManus / April 16, 2008 2:31 PM

If you're a fan of digg, you've probably been noticing that tech stories are becoming less and less a feature of the social news site. The reason? Digg is attempting to attract a large mainstream user base. Just how low has tech sunk in digg? We have new data that shows that the number of frontpage tech stories is halving every year on digg.

6 Web Apps To Get You Through A Slow News Day

By Guest Author / April 13, 2008 3:06 PM

Sometimes, news on the web is noticeably slow - especially in the weekends. It's ironic in a way, considering that millions of articles get written everyday and many go unnoticed. To address this need, here are six social media sites to help you find more great content.

Mixx to Digg: We Break News Faster

By Sarah Perez / March 25, 2008 8:11 AM

Today, social news web site, Mixx, announced new features to their service that will help them break news faster by getting big news stories promoted to the home page in a timely fashion. On the Mixx blog post about the changes, they point out that timeliness has been a problem with social news sites, themselves included - until now. To solve the problem, they have created a "Breaking News" category, which will only contain stories that only "Super Mixxers" can tag. Although this change does allow for faster story promotion for now, whether it's a good long-term solution has yet to be seen.

Yahoo Buzz is a Game Changer for Social Media; And Spells Trouble for Digg!

By Richard MacManus / March 16, 2008 9:28 PM

Yahoo Buzz is a social media experiment by Yahoo! that is currently in a closed beta. We found out today what kind of boost Buzz is giving the current selected blogs and news sources - Muhammad Saleem wrote that it is giving publishers huge bumps in both traffic and comments. Muhammad, you'll recall, wrote on ReadWriteWeb just about the only positive review of Yahoo Buzz when it first launched. In case you missed it, let's revisit the reasons why Buzz is a game changer. And why Digg is in big trouble...

Why Yahoo! Buzz is a Brilliant Idea

By Muhammad Saleem / February 27, 2008 1:00 PM

As soon as the online press got hold of a sliver of information about Yahoo! Buzz, the predictable cries of "Digg clone!" were loud enough to drown out anyone who thought that Yahoo! Buzz might be something more than a lame attempt at socially driven news (without the social elements). While many people think that the flurry of recent launches from Yahoo! represent nothing more than a cry of desperation, I think Yahoo! Buzz, at least, sets itself apart from the rest.

Social News: Can the Digg/Mixx/Buzz Model Hold Up Against FriendFeed and Sphinn?

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / February 26, 2008 8:46 AM

The social news space is developing at a mind-boggling pace. Just in the last 48 hours Yahoo! launched its new site Buzz, the increasingly mainstream site Mixx announced more funding and Digg held its first ever town hall meeting. Meanwhile a screenshot of the soon to be aggregated service Tumblr has been leaked, my email inbox is filling up with friend notifications from the $5 million richer FriendFeed and BricaBox launched a social content service. Those are just the highlights over the last two days, there's even more related news I'll pass over for now.

Digg Townhall To Address Censorship, Inequality

By Richard MacManus / February 22, 2008 11:26 AM

Love it or hate it, the social news site digg sure does have a passionate user base. This Monday night (February 25th) at 9pm EST/6pm PST, Digg is holding a virtual "Townhall webcast", in partnership with Ustream. In a recent blog post Digg founder Kevin Rose said that in the webcast "we’ll be talking about the latest happenings here at Digg and answer your questions". Which is corporate speak for 'we're trying to keep our users happy and ward off another revolt'. Lately top Digg users have been unhappy and some publishers (cough) are voicing concerns too.
