Casting Stones Before the FCC: Google Voice and AT&T
Ever since AT&T filed a letter with the FCC about Google Voice's refusal to connect to certain areas, the two companies have been in a heated public battle. On the one side, AT&T takes the stance that as a carrier, Google is required to offer open access to all numbers. Nevertheless, in today's blog rebuttal, Google asserts, "Google Voice is a free web application, one intended to supplement and enhance existing phone lines, not replace them."
FCC Tweets and Blogs for National Broadband Plan
The Federal Communications Commission launched a Twitter account and Blogband - a blog that will chronicle the progress and development of the National Broadband Plan. Said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, "We want it to be a two-way conversation. The feedback, ideas and discussions generated on this blog will be critical in developing the best possible National Broadband Plan". Genachowski has until February 2010 to submit a plan for broadband deployment to Congress. Telecoms, net neutrality lobbyists, tech companies and regular citizens are tripping over themselves to weigh in.
The Hottest Telecom Startups in Japan
Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology held its annual event for telecom related startups this week and several interesting companies gave presentations. Masaru IKEDA covered the event for the popular English language blog Asiajin and two of the companies caught our eye in particular.
Japan has long been a place where telephony and communications innovation can be found. Much of it is culturally specific but we think the work of companies Peace Mind Corp. and Brand Dialog could translate in interesting ways around the world.
OpenID Foundation Board of Directors: 17 Candidates Vie For Seven Spots
Few elements of the "Open Stack" have garnered as much attention - or as much support - as OpenID, a way to use a single digital identity across multiple Web sites. That acceptance led ReadWriteWeb's Marshall Kirkpatrick to call the OpenID Foundation "one of the leading organizations in the new standards world." In that same post, Kirkpatrick urged people to participate in the elections for the OpenID Foundation Board of Directors. Now, the time for that participation has come.
