How To Close a Deal with Phone Carriers and TV Networks

By Dana Oshiro / January 22, 2010 1:30 PM / View Comments

scanlan_photo_jan10.jpgThe words "mobile entertainment" are so overused that they fail to capture any real meaning anymore, but in 1999 Mobitv was one of the only companies trying to bring video to mobile phones. Today, most consumers would recognize Mobitv as the company that brings live CBS Sports coverage and NBA games to our iPhones. What many don't understand, is that in order to get all that great content onto our tiny devices, somebody had to convince Sprint, AT&T, US Cellular and Verizon to play along, while at the same time licensing enough high quality television content to make it a worthwhile service - President and Co-founder Paul Scanlan is that somebody.

Casting Stones Before the FCC: Google Voice and AT&T

By Dana Oshiro / October 9, 2009 2:42 PM / View Comments

google_fcc_oct09.jpgEver since AT&T filed a letter with the FCC about Google Voice's refusal to connect to certain areas, the two companies have been in a heated public battle. On the one side, AT&T takes the stance that as a carrier, Google is required to offer open access to all numbers. Nevertheless, in today's blog rebuttal, Google asserts, "Google Voice is a free web application, one intended to supplement and enhance existing phone lines, not replace them."

FCC Tweets and Blogs for National Broadband Plan

By Dana Oshiro / August 18, 2009 7:44 PM / View Comments

fcc_blog_aug09a.jpgThe Federal Communications Commission launched a Twitter account and Blogband - a blog that will chronicle the progress and development of the National Broadband Plan. Said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, "We want it to be a two-way conversation. The feedback, ideas and discussions generated on this blog will be critical in developing the best possible National Broadband Plan". Genachowski has until February 2010 to submit a plan for broadband deployment to Congress. Telecoms, net neutrality lobbyists, tech companies and regular citizens are tripping over themselves to weigh in.

The Hottest Telecom Startups in Japan

By Marshall Kirkpatrick / January 30, 2009 10:07 AM

nict.jpgJapan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology held its annual event for telecom related startups this week and several interesting companies gave presentations. Masaru IKEDA covered the event for the popular English language blog Asiajin and two of the companies caught our eye in particular.

Japan has long been a place where telephony and communications innovation can be found. Much of it is culturally specific but we think the work of companies Peace Mind Corp. and Brand Dialog could translate in interesting ways around the world.

OpenID Foundation Board of Directors: 17 Candidates Vie For Seven Spots

By Rick Turoczy / December 16, 2008 2:00 AM

openidnetlogo.jpgFew elements of the "Open Stack" have garnered as much attention - or as much support - as OpenID, a way to use a single digital identity across multiple Web sites. That acceptance led ReadWriteWeb's Marshall Kirkpatrick to call the OpenID Foundation "one of the leading organizations in the new standards world." In that same post, Kirkpatrick urged people to participate in the elections for the OpenID Foundation Board of Directors. Now, the time for that participation has come.

Favorite Podcasts of the ReadWriteWeb Community

By Richard MacManus / December 15, 2008 9:25 PM

Podcasting has had its challenges over the past couple of years and we even once questioned whether it would survive! But at heart we at ReadWriteWeb love listening to podcasts, nearly as much as we love reading blogs. So we decided to find out the favorite podcasts of our readers and writers. We put the call out on Twitter and got a great response. The results are below, together with the favorites of the ReadWriteWeb authors.

We'd like to continue the discussion in the comments - and also tell us how you listen to podcasts these days. I usually listen to them while walking the dog. But everyone is different, so tell us your preferred podcast listening method.
