A new tool called DeepTrawl allows site owners to proactively find such errors, then highlights the relevant bits of code in a proprietary editor where webmasters can edit and save their files in seconds. Especially for those who maintain multiple sites, this service could prove invaluable. Although the options are sophisticated, it's the app's speed and simplicity that impress us most.

]]> DeepTrawl identifies misspellings, broken links, and missing images. It can also find pages that load slowly or spammy/offensive comments. Searches can be timed and automated, as well. The company's demo video demonstrates a few of the functions in detail.

We tested the app on a site I built and maintain for a writer friend, and here's what we experienced:

Although the web browser view was nice (it gave us a split screen reminiscent of Dreamweaver), the DeepTrawl editor was ridiculously quick to use and made us think to ourselves, "This is the way web editing should be." The most difficult part of the process was remembering the site's FTP password.

Currently, the app is available for Windows and Mac only. Sorry, Linux friends. You'll have to resort to your Other Box of Shame for this one. Licenses are available from $49 to $299, depending on the number of pages to be trawled.

More Browser-as-Website-Editor Fun with TypeRoom Pro On May 19, TypeRoom launched their triple-tiered premium product, TypeRoom Professional. A bit like in-browser website creation and editing app Zimplit, which we reviewed yesterday, TypeRoom allows for simple and nearly instant web content editing without software and with little or no expertise in the subject.

While the free version of the service allows for the kind of lightweight, static HTML editing we reviewed in Zimplit, the Pro version is "a powerful and complete CMS that allows for extremely easy setup and integration and that gives a level of usability that we feel has not been attained before in a CMS," according to the TypeRoom blog.

]]> TypeRoom Lite, which launched last year, provided many of the same no-brainer features we liked about Zimplit along with a few added perks (users could save without immediately publishing pages, for example) and a slightly more complicated interface that consisted of a full dashboard rather than a miniature toolbar. The biggest difference between the two companies' offerings was that TypeRoom Lite allowed users to import existing websites rather than simply create them from scratch based on a WordPress-like template.

The Professional accounts will also provide for migration of full websites into the in-browser editing service. For the launch of the Professional accounts, TypeRoom is offering a limited number of free website migrations to early adopters.

Take a look at this demo video to see the editing functions in action:

The Pro account solutions for doing dead-simple SEO on the fly and accessing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code are elegant, indeed:

Another aspect we enjoyed was the library of video tutorials, which, as any "Photoshop expert" can tell you, is the key to developing a finely tuned design sensibility and getting the technical know-how to execute accordingly.

These tools seemed like they would work well enough for a complete web design amateur who simply needed to change copy, images, and links on an existing page; they also seemed to offer enough options for those with the technical skills to take advantage of them.

Overall, we feel the TypeRoom Professional accounts are better suited to small- to medium-sized businesses needing to take control of their existing websites in a way that is both simple and affordable. TypeRoom Pro accounts are likely not best for the casual individual user, the web design hobbyist, or anyone without a pre-existing home on the web. It also might not be the best solution for sites with heavy multimedia components. Still, the new addition to TypeRoom's offerings is the kind of robust, reliable tool that warrants the term "professional."

Nota, a Simple "Webmixer" Nota is a new collaboration tool from the same company that brought you PhotoPeach, an easy-to-use photo slideshow service and C-Shirt, a tool for making remixable clothing. Like PhotoPeach, Nota also has a similar minimalistic feel to it which makes it easy for anyone to use - even those with little computer experience. With Nota, you can create web pages by grabbing content like flickr photos, YouTube movies, Google maps, and more, and mashing them up into one page which can then be embedded anywhere.

]]> The best way to describe what Nota  offers is "casual collaboration." Unlike more complex whiteboarding or web design applications, Nota isn't designed for business use, but rather for anyone who wants to quickly and easily gather web content and combine it on a single page.

The Nota web site offers up some examples of how their tool can be used, including a study notebook for school which could incorporate Wikipedia articles and photos; an online scrapbook, where you organize your online photos into a collage; or even a greeting card, where you and several friends can all collaboratively sign it, leaving messages for the recipient. They even recommend several ways in which Nota can be used for educational presentations, like class projects. Nota is especially useful for that as notebooks can be worked on by as many as 50 users.

Getting started with the service is simple, too. You just sign up for an account and click the "Create New Notebook" button. You can then give your notebook a title and set it as public or private. Just be careful when selecting that last option because there doesn't appear to be a way to go back and change it later.

When adding web content, it's easy to search by keyword or you can enter an account name in order to grab specific photos from sites like flickr, Facebook, or Picasa. Unfortunately, you don't have the option to do the same with YouTube - you have to search for the videos instead. When you find the content you're looking for, one click lets you add it to the page where it can be dragged around, resized, rotated, etc.

When you're finished with your creation, click the "Share" tab and you can post the page to Facebook, Blogger, or LiveJournal or you can grab the embed code to post it anywhere else on the web.

Over the years, we've seen a lot of tools that promise easy web page creation, but Nota is one that really delivers. It really is as easy to use as they say it is and that makes it fun to goof around with, we have to admit. Although we might be a bit older than the intended demographic for the product, it's easy to imagine how younger kids and teens would really get a kick out of using Nota for customizing their online profiles or for working on school projects.

Nota has been in private beta for several months now, but the veil just lifted yesterday. The service is now a public beta, which means anyone can try it.
