If you use web conferencing services to view other peoples' desktops, you know how clunky they often feel. Long load times, heavy demands on your CPU, browser incompatibilities at launch - no fun. That's why it's exciting to see web office company Zoho launch a new lightweight HTML5 web conference viewer that runs in the browser. It seems to run really well, too.
Zoho said this morning that the new viewing option is faster than the company's Java, ActiveX and Flash options, it's secure and can play nicely with corporate firewalls. Presenters can set up meetings to display in HTML5 by default, but this new option is only for viewers. Participants seeking to present their own desktops will need to switch to the Java or ActiveX options.
As new firms enter the Web-based help desk services arena, we are seeing a blurring of lines between the traditional service desk products and the breed of public online Q&A types of services. Particularly as these tools adopt connections to social media, it is getting harder to tell whether these are two separate categories anymore, as IT becomes consumerized and as self-service style apps become more popular and capable.
Assistly, a social CRM and help desk software-as-a-service, announced version 2.0 of its product this week, including a new freemium pricing model. Your first Assistly user is now free, with no limitations. It costs $1 an hour for additional part-time agents or $49 a month for each full-time agent with unlimited usage.
Besides the pricing change, Assistly's admin panel and reporting features got a facelift.
ZohoCRM, the popular SaaS business suite, has extended its reach into the mobile world with two new apps for iPhones and Blackberries that are available today. You can watch the intro video here on their blog. The iPhone app integrates with other iPhone functions, such as getting directions to an address and sending emails to customers, as well as having your calls logged as activities inside the Zoho main CRM application.
Today, as expected Office 365 came out of beta. Office 365 is Microsoft's consolidated cloud-services system that combines hosted versions of Exchange Server, SharePoint Server and Lync Server.
So how does it hold up to two older offers, Google Apps and Zoho?
It's been more than two decades since Microsoft's now-ubiquitous suite of office productivity software was released. Although we've seen numerous free or low-cost alternatives arrive on the scene since then - OpenOffice.org, Google Docs and Zoho Docs to name a few - Microsoft Office still remains overwhelmingly dominant in this space.
Forrester reported two years ago that 80% of companies were running some version of Office, and this number hasn't budged much. In a recent report, Forrester noted that all respondents were running Office, with 74% of IT departments saying they supported Microsoft Office 2003 or earlier. By contrast, only 8% said they utilize Google Docs and 1% were on Zoho Docs.
Today Zoho announced Zoho Creator for Google Apps, bringing it total number Google Apps Marketplace offerings to 11 and making it the largest vendor in the marketplace. But more importantly, it is bringing Google Apps users an easy way to build simple applications on top of both the Zoho and Google platforms. There are limitations:
"Currently, there is no option to directly publish Zoho Creator apps within a Google Apps domain," says Zoho evangelist Raju Vegesna. "Google said they will look into this idea." However, Google Apps admins will be able to share apps with users within the domain.
The iPad isn't just a hot new consumer device, it's also an increasingly popular tool for business. Every week we take a look at the latest developments in its use in the enterprise.
This week we look at a new iPad app for cardiologists, new apps from SugarCRM, Radian6 and Zoho and a few more apps that bring SharePoint to the iPad.
Zoho has brought its popular online productivity tools Zoho Docs to the iPad.
The app is designed to give you mobile access to your Zoho documents, including those created in Zoho Writer, Sheet, Show, and Docs (the word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications). You can also view shared documents via the app.
